What We're Learning in 6th Grade Language Arts

Spelling: Greek Roots

This week's spelling list is comprised of words containing Greek roots. Why is it important to study Greek and Latin word parts?

  • Over 60% of the words students will encounter in school textbooks have recognizable word parts; and many of these Latin and Greek roots).
  • Latin and Greek prefixes, roots, and suffixes have predictable spelling patterns.
  • Content area vocabulary is largely Greek and Latin-based and research supports this instruction, especially for struggling readers.

Remember, students may go to www.spellingcity.com/tdrudy for additional practice with the weekly spelling lists.

The Emperor's Silent Army

We are reading The Emperor's Silent Army, another nonfiction selection. We will paying special attention to text features. Text features include all the components of a story or article that are not the main body of text. These include the table of contents, index, glossary, headings, bold words, sidebars, pictures and captions, and labeled diagrams. One of this week's reading group time activities is for students to identify nonfiction text features in a scavenger hunt.
