ADMINISTRATION UPDATE
Dear CCS Families,
This morning, CCS held its Fall Carnation Ceremony, with our eighth graders officially welcoming our Kindergartners to the CCS community. This is a very special CCS tradition that celebrates the many things that our K-8 school can offer - the connection between “littles and bigs”, a sense of community and tradition, and acknowledgment of the important milestones that occur within the journey that students travel in their K-8 years. The ceremony itself is special, but the behind-the-scenes practices and organic connections are the true gifts as they are the beginning of the friendships between younger and older students that will take place throughout the year.
We want to remind families that there are two upcoming dates for which there is no school for students:
Wednesday, October 9th - Yom Kippur,
Friday, October 18th - CVSD Parent-Teacher Conference Day.
Halloween at CCS
As you begin to plan for our upcoming Halloween parade, we ask that all costumes be respectful of everyone in our community. Costumes should not misrepresent groups of people, perpetuate stereotypes or exaggerate violence. For example, it could be offensive or unkind to dress as another gender, race or cultural group. If you'd like more information about the cultural implications of celebrating Halloween in schools please read: http://historynewsnetwork.org/article/157378
We wish to thank the many families represented at our two options to discuss parent participation and volunteerism in our school on Wednesday night and/or this morning! We are including the blurb regarding volunteer opportunities again in this week’s newsletter (see below), and we will be connecting with teachers in the next two weeks to send this information home in their weekly folders and communications. We are excited to see how we can enhance the ways in which we can work together!
We wish you all a wonderful weekend!
Kind Regards,
Stephanie, Jen and Cassandra

MUSIC NEWS
We are off to a terrific start in band this year!
The beginning band has their instruments and are working hard on learning their first five notes. Their enthusiasm is contagious and they are making remarkable progress already. Their first concert will be held in January and they are sure to amaze all in attendance.
The sixth grade band is embracing the new music which is at a much higher level of difficulty than anything they have played before. They are rolling up their sleeves and getting the hard work done with positive attitudes and great diligence. I am excited to imagine what they will accomplish this year!
The seventh and eighth graders are also off to an impressive start. The sound is powerful and the focus is better than ever. I am proud of their work ethic and the way they rise to the occasion of tackling the difficult program they are preparing. I look forward to every rehearsal and they make significant progress every time we get together. The sky's the limit for this group!
District III band and chorus auditions are right around the corner. Students who choose to participate will audition in early November. (we are working on the audition requirements in lessons). Once selected, they will take part in a two day event at the end of January combining with students for area schools to make an honors band, choir and orchestra. The festival will culminate with a fabulous concert. This year, the festival will be held at CVU. Keep your eyes on the newsletter for updates!
The 7 - 8 Jazz Band is one to watch this year. I am blown away by the strong start and participation. Some of our members were recently submitted to be selected for the District III Jazz Festival held in mid November. We are anxiously awaiting the results. All nominees will represent us well and make us proud. Please note that there will be no early morning rehearsal on Monday, October 7.
We look forward to performing at CCS and throughout the community this year. We hope to see you at one of our many upcoming performances!
Thank you for your continued support and please feel free to reach out to Andy Smith at asmith@cvsdvt.org or (802) 425 - 6653 or Monica Littlefield at mlittlefield@cvsdvt.org or (802) 425 - 6629.

VOLUNTEERING AT CCS
There are a variety of opportunities for volunteers at CCS. There are two categories of volunteers - supervised (must be in the presence of a staff member, less extensive records required), unsupervised (may work directly with students without staff supervision, more extensive records required). If you are interested in volunteering, please submit your information here: CCS Volunteer Sign-Up.
LOST AND FOUND
Our Lost and Found tables are starting to fill up! Lost and Found is in a new location this year - in the lobby/atrium by the MPR. Please look there if you are missing clothing, shoes, lunch boxes or other items. Periodically, we clean these tables out and donate items to Goodwill. Additionally, we are finding lots of clothing on the bus, the playground, and in the cafeteria - many items do not have student names in them. If you can put your child's name on their clothing, that is a huge help - especially layering items like sweaters, hoodies, vests, and coats.
Thank you! Our next clean-up date is Friday, October 25th.
TIPS FOR EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL WELLBEING
Dear Caregivers,
Teaching kids how to identify and express their feelings are two of the most important things we can do in early childhood development. This will naturally lead to strategies that enable kids to ask for help and hopefully set them up for a lifetime of emotional and physical wellbeing. As you know, we all express and cope with feelings differently. As we increase a child’s exposure to different skills and coping strategies, we increase the likelihood of finding what works for them. The articles below highlight the importance of teaching emotional expression to kids, with simple ideas that may work for you at home. Engaging in these activities with your child can be excellent modeling, and you may even discover a few exercises you’d like to use on your own!
