Special Education Updates

September 3, 2015

Welcome back to the 2015-2016 school year! I hope that you are off to a great start and that you are enjoying your new or returning students. My name is Michelle Lutz and I am the new supervisor of special education. I will be supporting the intermediate and middle schools as the LEA for all special education and gifted students.

A little about me, I have two children(Jori, 11 and Will, 6), a husband (Brandon), a dog(Puggles) and two cats(Spartacus and Persephone). In our spare time, you can find us out hiking the beautiful trails in PA, hanging out by our pool or at the Eagles' games! After spending 12 years in Philadelphia teaching, serving as a building level SPED supervisor and finally as a principal, I am very excited to be here in Upper Moreland. I look forward to working with everyone and I am here to help you in any way that I can.

September Reminders

Tips and Tricks

Students should never be allowed to "Opt Out". A sequence that begins with a student unable to answer a question should end with the student answering that question as often as possible.

For example, if David doesn't know the answer to 5x5, call another student for the answer.

But once David has heard the correct answer, circle back and ask David the question again.

According to Doug Lemov, much of student behavior is opportunistic and undertaken in reaction to the gray area, "I can get away with it, so I will." A far smaller number of students will persist in a behavior once you've made it unambiguous what you expect.
