Around the School Spotlight
Our Kinder and 1st grade STEM students were asked to build a maze out of Keva Planks that had two openings (start and finish) and two turns. Once the maze was created, they were provided an iPad and a Sphero Indi robot and were asked to connect their robot to the Edu Jr app on the tablet. Once connected, they had to navigate to the Arcade drive feature in Edu Jr and use their skills to drive Indi through the maze and back to them. They had to pay close attention to their robot’s speed, estimate the turn angles, and adjust accordingly to navigate through it successfully. Once they completed the first challenge, they were expected to design a more complex maze with multiple turns and attempt to navigate Indi through it as before.
Our students are so lucky to have such amazing STEM experiences with Mrs. Bretsch!
BizTown!
After learning about banking, community, and career-readiness in the classroom, all 5th graders completed job applications and interviewed for positions. Students were hired to run 19 businesses at BizTown and spent all day Friday, April 14th running the city of BizTown. They gave speeches, worked in their jobs, priced and sold goods, went to the bank, ate lunch, and got to go shopping with the money they received from their two paychecks. This taste of adult life is such a fun and engaging tradition in 5th grade. The BizTown staff was so impressed with our Hawks!
State Testing
Our 3rd-5th graders begin state testing next week. Our first week of testing will include the English Language Arts assessment. A great way that families can help get students ready for testing is by getting a good night’s sleep and starting them off with a healthy breakfast. During this week, we will be asking that all watch phones be turned off and placed in students’ backpacks during testing. Interactions with watches (that act like phones) can cause a testing impropriety, so we find it helpful to be proactive.
Emergency Drills (April 24-May 5)
All schools in our District will be participating in emergency drills April 24 - May 5. Hawks View will be participating in a Secure drill.
These drills are an essential part of our emergency preparedness, and help students and staff to practice specific protocols that would occur in an emergency situation. Practice drills such as these are also an opportunity for our administrators and staff to collaborate with the Sherwood Police Department. You may notice increased police presence if you are on/near campus during our drill, as SPD officers often participate in these drills.
During a Secure drill, students are brought inside the school building and exterior building doors are locked, while students and staff may continue to use hallways or other common areas. No one will be allowed to enter or exit the building until the drill has been completed.
For more information on District emergency response protocols and communication, please visit the SSD website here.
Attendance Update
As shared with you last week, our Hawks View team has partnered with our technology team to pilot a new attendance emailing system. This email was sent yesterday, on April 20th, and will be again in mid-May. All families will receive an email with an update on their student’s attendance for the school year. We know that regular attendance is a key factor in the success of our students, and we are hoping that these updates will help parents with more timely attendance information. We are required by the state to track and report attendance data and to move forward with attendance processes in order to support an improvement in attendance rates. Additional letters will be mailed for students falling below our state attendance guidelines. As always, if we can help in any way with improving your child’s attendance, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher or directly to me. We would be happy to help in any way we can. Please know, there is no specific action needed on your end from those emails, this is just to make you aware that you will be receiving them. Thank you for your continued partnership!
Spirit Week
Show your spirit May 1st through May 5th! Each day will have a different theme. Check out the flyer for more details!
Seeking Parent/Guardian Feedback on our Local Wellness Program Policy
The Sherwood School District is seeking parent/guardian feedback on our Local Wellness Program policy, which can be found on our website here (Board Policy EFA-AR). All feedback collected will be shared with our Wellness Committee this spring, who will assess the implementation and progress of the Local Wellness Program and provide a progress report at a future Board of Directors meeting, as well on our District website for public review.
If you would like to provide feedback on the policy, please complete the form using the link below. All feedback is anonymous.
Multicultural Night
Join us in celebrating Multiculturalism! On May 3, 2023 from 6:30 to 8:30 in Sherwood High School, neighboring clubs will be performing to share their traditional dances, songs, and cultural talents. There will be Chinese drums and dance, Filipino, bamboo dance, Polynesian dances, Sherwood Schools students performing various Latin folk dances and songs, a Japanese song, Sherwood High School Choir, and an art show featuring our talented ELD students of all ages and SHS artists! Meet the performers after the show and learn some of the traditional dances and songs from various booths in the commons. Raffle prices will conclude the evening's event!

VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED!
Hello to our amazing Hawks View volunteers!
One of the fun things about spring (because this year I can’t say the sun) is Hawks View’s annual carnival! Our Cinco de Mayo theme this year is going to make it extra festive!
Our fundraising coordinator has been busy at work getting everything organized and planned (and she’s nailing it), but we won’t be able to make it happen without you, our incredible parent volunteers!
The carnival is Friday, May 5.
First shift is 3:30 pm – 5:50 pm
Second shift is 5:50 pm – 8:30 pm
Some slots have been filled with high school students, but there are still lots left and if we can all pitch in, it makes the work easier for everyone! And if you haven't ever volunteered at a carnival, it is really FUN!
THANK YOU for all you do to help make our community so great!
Please use the link below to sign up! Be sure you have completed your background check and shown proof of your Covid vaccination to the office staff. If you need an exception form, contact the front office at 503-825-5400.
