Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 23rd September 2016
the animals came in two by two
We were thrilled to have Little Givendale Farm visit us on Tuesday. All the children had the chance to stroke the animals, with Year 2 also enjoying workshops to help with this term's topic 'Where does our food come from?'. The class went out on Thursday for further learning on the topic when they visited James Potter Eggs.
bolton castle
Year One also had an exciting time on Wednesday, when they visited Bolton Castle. They were welcomed by Master David who works for Lord Bolton and immediately dressed as young masters and mistresses for a typical mediaeval day in a castle. This included lunch in a candlelit hall with a roaring fire and climbing to the roof of the castle to survey the Lord's lands. They found their way to the middle of the maze, but had more trouble on the way out! There was even time to see the owls and birds of prey. It was an amazing day.
governor news
In addition, the governors welcome Mrs Emma McCormick as staff governor.
parent teacher meetings 14th October
pe lessons
We have had enough hoody returns in to place our first order with the uniform shop. We hope to distribute the hoodies here rather than send you all to the shop!
All classes have PE on Thursdays with our PE specialist teacher. Please could you ensure that any earrings are taped before you come to school, or preferably taken out for the day. Thank you.
Do you have a spare room?
As yet we have not had any volunteers to give a temporary home to our Spanish student.
Our partnership with the university in Segovia continues this year. We hope to welcome another trainee teacher to join us. We are looking for a family with a spare room who would be willing to host the student. The willing family could specify a male or female student. It is an excellent opportunity for your children to improve their Spanish and learn about a different culture. They would pay towards their accommodation costs up to £200 per month and are expected to contribute to the household for example cleaning, cooking or babysitting. The school depends on host families for this project to continue. If you would like more information please pop into the school office or see Mrs Binks.

message from the Cathedral
It was wonderful to see so many children at Cathedral Club this week. We are looking at Creation stories this half term and shared the very first story about when God created the world. It was interesting to hear their views about how God might have got there in the first place (did God have a Dad?), right through to some very knowledgeable ideas about The Big Bang Theory. Sometimes teaching the Old Testament is hard but we agreed that the story was there to help people understand their place in the world…we will see how we fare with Adam and Eve!
Canon Ruth warmly invites children from Y6-10 to join in her “Youth Burst”. This is held every week this term until November 28th at her home, St. Peter’s House and sounds very exciting. They will be exploring their themes through Harry Potter, Lego and The Simpsons, with pizza thrown in for good measure…who could resist? Booking forms are available from school or you can e-mail Canon Ruth at canonruth@riponcathedral.org.
We are very excited about our forthcoming Ceilidh to be held in the nave of the Cathedral on Saturday 1st October at 7.30pm. This is a family event and a rare opportunity to dance the night away and share a delicious supper actually inside the Cathedral. There will be a cash bar serving drinks for all.
Tickets are £12.50 single or £30 for a family. (A family constitutes you and your own children).
There are some tickets available to buy in school or you can also purchase them in the Cathedral Shop.
We look forward to seeing you!
