Virtual Parenting Series with Jackie Rhew
All District 47 families are invited to attend the third of a four-part virtual parenting series with Jackie Rhew on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 @ 7pm via Zoom. Jackie Rhew is a clinical consultant, author/speaker, and co-founder of the Center for Emotional Wellness in Crystal Lake and Arlington Heights. This discussion will focus on the number one reason young people seek counseling, anxiety. But what exactly is anxiety? And how do you recognize it and help a child who suffers from it? In this in-depth workshop, parents/guardians will learn the difference between stress and anxiety and how to support a child who is struggling. They will also learn how to help their child(ren) build resiliency and if/when to seek professional help. Translation will be available in multiple languages via captioning in Zoom. Click here for the Zoom link and directions on how to enable captions for language translation.

2023 5Essentials Parent Survey
The 5Essentials parent survey, administered online by UChicago Impact, is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of schools. It is intended to help school districts understand the conditions at each school and to help guide improvement. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. Parents are encouraged to take the survey for their child's school by visiting https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/. Parent identity and survey responses will be kept confidential and will not be connected to their student(s). Families can submit one survey for each child. The 5Essentials survey window will be open through March 31, 2023.
Cold and Flu (Influenza) Season is Here; Helpful Hints from the Health Office
Here are some guidelines to help with your decision on whether or not to send your child to school. Please be advised that if your child has any of the symptoms listed below your student should not attend school:
- Fever > 100.4
- Rash of unknown cause
- Sore throat with fever
- Nausea and vomiting
- Occasional diarrhea (2 or more in a 24 hr period of time)
Please review the following guidelines linked here if your child has recently been ill before having your child return to school. To help keep your child(ren) healthy, make sure they have plenty of rest and a good nutritious diet. Make sure they are dressed properly when playing outside. It is a good idea to send an extra change of clothing to be kept in your student(s) locker/cubby. Please notify the school if your child has been diagnosed with strep throat, chickenpox, scarlet fever, etc. The single most important thing you can do to keep your child free of illness is to teach the proper way to wash hands. Make sure your student knows to use soap and while rubbing both hands together for 15 seconds. Then rinse hands in running warm water and dry them thoroughly. Hand sanitizer is only to be used if traditional soap and water is not available.
If you have any questions about whether or not to send your student(s) to school, feel free to email or call Mrs. Keegan at 815-788-5555 or email here at Ajkeegan@d47.org.
Cell Phone/Smartwatch Reminder
Elementary Students are allowed to have a cell phone or smartwatch at school as long as it is turned off from 8:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cell phones must remain in the student’s locker at all times during the school day. Smartwatches are not to be used as internet access or cellular devices during the school day. Note: Elementary school lockers do not lock and the school/district is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen personal property.
District 47 treats any electronic device with the capability to call, text, or take photos as a cell phone/smartwatch. If a student uses the device inappropriately and/or if it causes a disruption during the school day, the device will be confiscated and taken to the school office. If a student needs to make an emergency call during the day, the student should request permission to go to the main office and use the phone. If parents need to contact their child during the day, they should call the school’s main office.
Cell phones will not be allowed on field trips and should be set to silent/vibrate while riding to and from school on a school bus.
Winter Guidelines for Outside Student Activities
During the cold winter weather, be sure that your child comes to school with appropriate winter coats, hats, gloves, etc. Students go outside daily for lunch recess and need to be dressed for the weather. The guidelines established by District 47 during cold weather are as follows:
Temperature/Wind Chill - Maximum Time Outside
- 15 degrees or warmer - Unlimited
- 0 to 15 degrees - 20 minutes
- Below 0 degrees - Students remain indoors
Headphones
All students must have working headphones to be kept at school. During the year, headphones can break or stop working and should be replaced once your student informs you that they need a new pair. Thank you!
