End of Year Information from Dr. Flansburg
Sunnyside Community,
It’s hard to believe this is the final Principal Points of the year! While most of this is repeat information from last week, I ask that you please take a moment to familiarize yourself with this information again as we prepare for the final days of school. Just as a reminder, Wednesday, June 3 will be our final day of online instruction and our student wave-off and send-off will be Thursday, June 4. Specific information about the wave-off is below.
Student/Staff Wave-Off
Thursday, June 4 we will have times for families to drive by the school to allow our students and teachers to say goodbye one final time before we head into summer. Teachers and staff will be positioned on Rainbow Lane to wave goodbye to families. Please know, we need to adhere to social distancing guidelines, so families will not be able to stop or get out of their cars. If you want to wave goodbye to your teachers, turn onto Rainbow Lane from Co. Rd. H and teachers will be on the school side of the street. Please note, we need families to be in their vehicles, and cannot have students and families walking or riding bikes as part of our wave-off.
1st-grade teachers will be curbside from 11:00 - 11:45 a.m.
2nd-grade teachers will be curbside from 11:45 - 12:30 p.m.
3rd-grade teachers will be curbside from 12:30 - 1:15 p.m.
4th-grade teachers will be curbside from 1:15 - 2:00 p.m.
5th-grade teachers and staff will be curbside from 2:00 - 2:45 p.m.
When you reach the end of Rainbow Lane you will need to turn left onto Sunnyside Terrace as Sunnyside Terrace will be closed between Brighton Lane and Sunbow Lane due to school construction. Teachers will be unable to come to your cars and will be adhering to social distancing guidelines during this time. If you have anything you need to get to your classroom teacher, please bring these to school on Friday between 8:00 a.m. and noon, and we will make sure we deliver to them. This allows our staff to ensure they can practice the social distancing guidelines for the wave-off as established by the Minnesota Department of Health and Department of Education. Thank you for your help!
Chromebooks:
Students will keep their Chromebook over the summer unless your child is NOT returning to the Mounds View School District next year, or the Chromebook isn’t functioning correctly. All students, including students who will be sixth-graders, will be expected to bring their Chromebook to school when we return next year.
Materials Collection
If your family is moving and not returning to Mounds View Public Schools, we will have a materials collection on Friday, June 5 from 8:00 - Noon. During this time you will be able to drive up and drop off your Chromebooks, band or orchestra instruments, library books, other school materials you may have, and anything you have for your teacher(s).
To maintain a safe environment for the members of our staff and school community, we will use the same format as we used for our first distribution event. The drop off of materials will be done in a drive-up format. Families and students will still not have access to the inside of the school building. Families will remain in their vehicle, and a staff person will come out to assist you.
Thank you, Sunnyside families, for a great year of partnership. We look forward to seeing everyone back in the fall. Have a great summer!

Grading and End of Year Report Cards
We have received guidance from the Minnesota Department of Education and worked closely with our District Leadership to ensure that this unprecedented situation of distance learning does not adversely affect how we report your child’s academic progress. The learning that has occurred throughout the entire school year will allow each student to progress to the next grade level. However, the method of reporting at the end of this year will look different than in previous years. This will be reflected as an “S” on your child’s report card to indicate “satisfactory” and continuation onto the next grade. Your child’s report card will be available through ParentVue on Friday, June 5. Your child’s teacher is the best source of information about your student's progress, so please do not hesitate to reach out in these final weeks. Going into fall, we will be checking in on any additional learning from the previous year that your child needs in order to meet students where they are in their learning and assist in their growth.

Orchestra Information for Students Entering 5th and 6th Grades
We know fourth and fifth graders have been anxiously waiting for their chance to sign up for summer orchestra, and NOW is the time! Orchestra is a fun, exciting and vibrant community to join. Since we can’t meet in person, we are preparing an exciting program using new digital tools to help you continue to grow your skills in orchestra. This year, classes will meet for 30 minutes on Mondays/Wednesdays OR Tuesdays/Thursdays from July 6-30. For full details and registration information on your grade and instrumentation, see below.
5th grade summer orchestra interactive sectionals (for students entering fifth grade in fall 2020)
6th grade summer orchestra interactive sectionals (for students entering sixth grade in fall 2020)
We will also prepare to perform the National Anthem at the Twins game on Tuesday, September 15. We have reserved the date, but the performance will be confirmed at a later date due to forthcoming state guidelines and recommendations.
We look forward to making and exploring new music with you this summer!
Mounds View Summer Band - Distance Learning
We have made some changes to our Summer Band Program so that we will be able to offer Distance Learning classes. The dates are the same, July 6-July 30, with various times for all instruments and students. Financial assistance is available for families who qualify. Summer Band students will be able to use school chromebooks and will also receive a subscription to SmartMusic. These will be necessary resources for our Distance Learning instruction. Students will be able to pick up instruments and other materials the last week of June as needed. Details will be provided at a later date. Check out our website for more information.
Current Band Students - If you have already registered for the Intro to Middle School Band, there are some changes. We will be offering 30-minute 6th Grade Band Sectionals which will meet Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Community Education will update your course and send an e-mail to confirm your enrollment in the new Distance Learning program. Please allow up to 2 weeks for this process. You may contact Community Education if you wish to make any further changes. If you haven’t registered, you may view the times available for each instrument and complete the online registration for Summer Band HERE.
Current 4th Graders - Summer Band registration for Beginning Band is now open. Watch this informational video HERE to help decide what instrument you would like to play in band. We'd encourage students to watch this with their parents and discuss your options together. Click HERE for information on how to rent an instrument and how to sign up for summer classes (45-minute classes will be offered in the morning and evening for all instruments).
Students who are unable to participate in the summer beginning band program will have opportunities to learn the instruments and play in the band when school resumes in the fall.
In the event that the program needs to change or is canceled due to Covid-19 restrictions, Community Education will help families reschedule, or provide a full refund.
