PARENT CONNECT
Our next Parent Connect is February 16 (K-2), February 18 (3-6), February 22 (7-8) see you then! Zoom links will be sent next week via email.
We had a great Parent Connect in January! Thank you for sharing and offering helpful feedback, we appreciate you. Here’s a brief recap with some of the resources shared.
Kinder - 2nd Grade
Mrs. Maher presented a fabulous slide show about how to support your student in ELA. Here’s the link in case you missed it: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1eLCn1l8Zhu8Kryr2mliX_LmOdf4V8gtfH2I_cBhWoX4/edit?usp=sharing
Parents asked wonderful questions about reading levels. If you have questions about your child’s reading level please reach out to their teacher.
We talked about the productive struggle when learning to read. Mrs. Maher highly recommends “Your Fantastic Elastic Brain”, by JoAnn Deak, Ph.D. to help students learn about productive struggle.
Defining reading for enjoyment and reading for instruction was helpful.
Reading Eggs is a big hit. A few parents asked what is the next program after Reading Eggs. Students will then move on to Reading Eggspress.
3rd - 6th Grade
Parents report that writing can be a subject that causes frustration. Parents shared a community laugh over “writing tantrums” by both parents and students! Here’s a few suggestions shared to help:
Request for teacher clarification in writing assignments.
Difficulty understanding expectations ahead of time - would like to see examples.
Voice to text in Google Docs
Read & Write with Chromebooks
Grammarly program to help with more in depth grammar support.
Using Epic as a place to research for writing projects
Setting time chunks aside for writing
In addition to these great suggestions we will also focus our next Parent Connect on writing supports at home. The 3-6 team has put together a collective of resources, pre writing ideas and Odysseyware tips to support your writer. We will share this slideshow in our next Parent Connect.
Resources shared:
Khan Academy as parent and student support.
Spectrum workbooks as great gap fillers or extensions of curriculum.
Have kiddos retell a lesson or read aloud their work to another family member or even over the phone. Verbalizing helps recall and can create motivation.
Nova on PBS as a way for research but also fun documentaries to entertain.

MUSIC, ART AND PE KITS!
Pick Up day Thursday, February 11th! We will be distributing supplies to families from 9-11 and 1-3 in front of the gym at the HOA campus on third street. Please drive up and remain in your car, we will bring stuff to you for safety.
The district has provided these kits for all K-6 students throughout the district. There is a separate PE and Music kit for K-2, and 3-6 students. These music instruments and the PE equipment will be used in lessons led by our district teachers on the PE and Music Google Classroom links. Right Brain Artists have included age appropriate Art lessons for at home use as well.
Safer Internet Day is 2/9
Safer Internet Day aims to create both a safer and a better internet, where everyone is empowered to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. The campaign aims to reach out to children and young people, parents and careers, teachers, educators and social workers, as well as industry, decision makers and politicians, to encourage everyone to play their part in creating a better internet. By celebrating the positive power of the internet, the Safer Internet Day slogan of “Together for a better internet” encourages everyone to join the movement, to participate, and to make the most of the internet’s potential to bring people together. With a global, community-led approach, Safer Internet Day encourages everyone to come together and play their part.
