Blue Jay Broadcast
October 22, 2021
Dear Families,
It’s that spooky time of year again and next Friday, students will permitted to wear Halloween costumes to school. The purpose of DRESSING UP FOR HALLOWEEN is to have fun and to create spirit in the school. In fact, students will gain spirit points for their class by dressing up. Seniors will have a Senior Breakfast during period 1 in addition to being able to parade around the school in their costumes following their breakfast. And seniors will be eligible for prizes for various categories determined by student council.
BASIC COSTUME RULES
•Costumes may not have parts that interfere with learning. This means no masks or costumes that restrict movement or vision, prevent sitting at desks, or prevent participation in physical education class. Costumes must not obstruct movement in the hallways.
•Costumes may not promote violence or have accessories or props that could be used or construed as a weapon. No pretend “prop” weapons such as water pistols, knives or swords.
•Only face-masks are not permitted. Masks that cover more than the mouth and nose are not permitted.
•No “revealing” clothing, such as underwear, bikinis, or Speedos.
•Appropriate shoes must be worn, etc.
•Costumes cannot promote use of drugs, alcohol or weapons of any kind.
•All school rules will be enforced (i.e., no bikes, skateboards, roller blades, etc.).
•Costumes may not be offensive or inappropriate in any way.
•Students should not wear costumes that make fun of others or make others feel uncomfortable.
All students participating must come to school dressed in their costumes -- time is not permitted for getting ready in the building. Therefore, students should not bring makeup or hair products to school. Students who wish to participate must be dressed in appropriate costumes, costumes that are creative, costumes that are in good taste, costumes that do not hurt or bring embarrassment to the school, parents or the student himself. The student is responsible for knowing whether something is appropriate or not. If you have a question as to whether a costume is appropriate or not ask Ms. Chibbaro or Mr. Bovee.
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

SCHOOL DRESS CODE
• Safety
• Security
• Ensuring a positive culture: nothing offensive or promoting things that are illegal
• Ensuring equity for all groups
• Preventing things that have the potential to cause a major distraction to the learning environment
There are two things to look at when considering changing school rules. Policies and regulations. A policy is the way that school districts implement state laws around education. Policies are approved by Boards of Education. Regulations are written to formalize how the district will follow the policy and tend to be more specific.
The executive board and I will be discussing potential changes. Afterward, I will convene a committee of staff members to do the same and eventually will bring the groups together before presenting some recommendations to the Superintendent.
Student Safety During Drop and Pick Up
The health, safety, and security of our students remain a top priority for our district. We want to share again our student drop off procedures for Middlesex High School. In order to reduce some traffic congestion, we recommend that students in grades 9 and 10 enter through the front entrance of the school at Door #1 while students in grades 11 and 12 enter through the rear of the school at Door #14. Door #14 is at the back of the school off Second Street. Parents should form a one way loop using the road closest to the pool (Milton Place) to come in and drop off at the back door and leave out the road second closest to Route 28 (Pearl Place). The road closest to Route 28 has a sign that reads "This is not an exit".
If parents wish to drop their child off and then access Bound Brook Road eastbound (towards Dunellen), the safest way to do that would be by traveling behind the school and accessing any of the side streets (Second, First, High, Main or North Lincoln) to access Bound Brook Road. This would alleviate further congestion and backups on Van Ness Drive and be safer for all motorists in the area.
Students walking to school and wising to cross Bound Brook Road shall obey all traffic signals and shall do so only at the pedestrian signal located at Bound Brook Road and John F. Kennedy Drive, manned by a crossing guard 7:30-8:30am and 2:30-3:30pm on school days.
Please try to plan accordingly based on traffic at that time of day. Our school is open for students starting at 7:20am. School starts promptly at 8am. Thank you!
MPD Food Drive
The Middlesex Borough Police Department and local youth volunteers are joining forces again for a food drive! The food drive will run from October 1-November 1 and will benefit REPLENISH (formerly MCFOODS). Be sure to monitor our social media for more information!
We are looking for locations in which we can place food collection bins. Please let me know if you have any interest in taking part in the food drive. If you do not wish to have a bin at your location for collections, donations can be made at any time during the month at our police department.
Thank you very much for your continued support to our department and our community.
From,
A/Sgt. Joleen Auricchio
