School Choice
Volusia County Schools is excited to announce a new on-line school choice (formerly referred to as a variance) application. Effective March 1 families may apply to attend a school that is not their zone school from the comfort of their home! The application is located on Parent Portal. Once logged into the Parent Portal simply select the school choice application tab and then the student. Once the application is complete, hit submit and your work is done. Notifications regarding the application’s status will be on your Parent Portal account. If you desire to complete a paper application, that process is still available by picking up an application at any school.
Choice is limited to schools with capacity (listed on the VCS website) and transportation will not be provided. A lottery procedure will be used if there are more applicants than seats.
Please note the deadline for applications for the 2017-18 school year is the last day of this school year (May 26, 2017). Decisions will be made in May and you will be notified via your parent portal account if you applied electronically. If you applied using the paper application process, notifications are provided via U.S. mail.
If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Student Assignment at 386-947-8786 or visit www.myvolusiaschools.org.
After School Parent to Kid Program
Dear parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students,
After Spring Break, Mr. Walters and Mr. Pierre will be offering a 5 week after school program of Parent to Kid classes in English. The classes will be held at our school 2 hours in the afternoon, one day per week for 5 weeks. The specific time and room number for the classes will be given to the parents in the participation invitations that will be sent home next week. The same information will also be posted on posters throughout campus. Parent to Kid is a Title One funded Program that gives the parent the tools to help their child with reading, homework, conferencing with teachers, and understanding the rigors of state learning standards and standardized testing. A minimum of 8 participating parents and their children is needed in order to begin these classes.
Thank you,
Mr. Pierre
K-Kids Club at DLE
Who: K-Kids Club at Deltona Lakes Elementary
What: Hugs 4 Lugs-Luggage collection for Foster Children /toiletries, hygeine items
Where: Bring Luggage and items to the front office
When: February 28th-March 24th
We had our first successful K Kids meeting on Wednesday and the students were very excited to decide on our first volunteering/community service project. Beginning on February 28th-March 24th, we will be accepting donations of gently used luggage for local Foster Children. Studies have shown that most foster children travel from house to house, often using garbage bags as a mean of transporting their belongings. Our K Kids want to join forces with others in Volusia County on the same mission: Let's trade HUGS for LUGS (luggage) :) If you or anyone you know has luggage they no longer use, please consider donating it to the cause. The front office has graciously agreed to collect the luggage and store it in the office. We will also be collecting toiletries or other supplies that you feel would benefit these children. You can submit those as well.
Thank you all for your support and for your encouragement of our students as they learn the value of community service and good character!
Have a terrific day!
The Multicultural Festival scheduled for the evening of March 9th has been cancelled.
Grade Level News
Kindergarten
Wow Kindergarten families we are super excited about the achievements of your children. They are beginning to read, sound out words and do math word problems! We are looking forward to the month of March. We will be learning all about the life cycle of insects and plants. We are continuing to work on retelling stories using characters names when retelling. After you have read a story with your child ask him/her to retell the major events to you and encourage them to use characters names instead of pronouns (he or she). You can also ask some comprehension questions to your students. For example: What is your favorite part of the story? Why did you like that part? Asking these type of questions will allow your child to improve his/her comprehension. Please continue reading with your students nightly, fifteen minutes is perfect. We also want to thank you for your continued support of our Kindergarten classrooms.
First Grade
First Grade students learned about Presidents Washington, Lincoln, and Roosevelt as we honored all presidents on Presidents’ Day. In math, students will be assessed on adding and subtracting multiples of ten from any number to 120 and place value. Students will take the next Volusia Literacy Test which requires students to read two texts independently and then answer questions using evidence from the text. Teachers will read only the questions and answers. The final assessment in May will require students to read the text, questions, and answers independently. We are working towards that goal! They can do it! In science, students are learning about living vs. non-living things.
What’s coming up? The final field trip for first grade will be on Wednesday, April 19th to the Marine Discovery Center. First Grade awards will be on May 10th and Frog Fest will be on Thursday, May 18th. Mark your calendars!
Second Grade
Second grade has been working hard on immigration, the Statue of Liberty, government and citizenship. We are learning all about counting money and making change. The students were excited about bottle cars and the use of force/motion. We will be experimenting with magnets soon.
We hope everyone has a fun and safe spring break.
Third Grade
Third grade is getting excited about our Sea World field trip April 27th! Please be sure you can join the fun return your permission slips and payment by April 12th!!

Fourth graders are attending their annual St. Augustine trip on March 23, 2017. Students will explore Florida’s history while visiting the Fountain of Youth, touring the town on a trolley, exploring hidden treasures while visiting the fort and participating in Colonial Kids activities. The cost of the field trip is $50, which includes lots of activities and a Chick-fil-A lunch! Students will participate in hands on activities and will be able to explore the land we have been discussing about in class. Students will be returning from St. Augustine at 5 pm.
Coaches Corner
Don't forget, Friday March 10th is D.L.E.'s Octolympics starting at 8 AM. There will be eight events for our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to compete for glory and ribbons.

P.E. Reminder
Just a reminder on PE days to wear safe, comfortable, flat bottomed shoes like sneakers to prevent injuries and keep everyone safe on and off the courts. Avoid wearing boots or sandals as it makes it difficult to run and play with other students.
Jump Rope For Heart
On January 31st Deltona Lakes Elementary had their Kick off for this year’s Jump Rope for Heart campaign with the “Go Wild” for heart health. The school set a goal to raise $3,000 to contribute to The American Heart Association. The students set up individual on-line donation sites and also asked for donations from friends, family and local businesses. Depending on the dollar figure raised the students had opportunities to earn “Thank You” gifts from the Heart Association by receiving various members of the Zoo Crew.
February 17th was the big day of the Jump Rope for Heart Celebration. Each student came to PE for special area and joined in many activities to celebrate Heart Health. Some of the activities included heart face painting, giant Jenga, jump roping, music, basketball and bean bag heart toss. Students from the Deltona High School Health Academy came and shared their knowledge about smoking, tobacco and heart health tips through games, worksheets and interacting with the kids. They also brought their stethoscopes so the kids could listen to their own heartbeats. The students wore their Roary McFiercely character lanyards and enjoyed a day of heart fun. The top five fund raising students had a pizza party with the coaches and the class with the most participants received a playground basket. If a student raised $30.00 they were able to autograph the coaches jump rope t-shirts.
It was a great way to spend a day and celebrate our heart while giving to others through the American Heart Association to learn about theirs and further heart research.

Deltona Lakes Elementary School Extended Day Summer Program
Summertime and the livin’ is easy”– easy that is, if you’ve gotten your child enrolled in the Deltona Lakes Elementary School Extended Day Summer Program. Extended Day has a history of 23 years of summer programs held right here on our school campus. Our hours are from 6:30 AM until 5:45 PM, Monday through Friday. We have a fun, creative schedule packed full of interesting activities and programs for your child, along with off campus field trips every Friday. And with summer school being held here on our campus during the month of July, think of how easy it will be to drop your child off in the morning for summer school, and then have them walk straight from their classrooms at the end of the school day, and come to us in the cafeteria to join our program until you can come and pick them up. As an added bonus, ALL of our students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch all summer long.
Our program is open to Volusia County Public School students, so if your child does not attend our school or our Extended Day Program during the school year, they are still welcome to join us in the summer.
Registration will begin on Monday, March 6th, and will be open to the first 65 students who register on a first come, first served basis. We start our summer program on Monday, June 5th and go until Friday, August 4th. Registration will require a $15.00 registration fee, the first week’s tuition, plus a $10.00 field trip fee. Tuition fees are available upon request and are based on a sliding scale according to income.
Have your child come join us for a fun filled summer – you’ll be glad you did!
Extended Day Helping Others
Starting after Spring Break, Extended Day will be participating in a Community Service Project for Journey’s End Animal Sanctuary in DeLand.
Journey’s End Sanctuary provides lifetime care and shelter for dogs, cats, horses, pigs, birds, and sheep that have been abused, neglected, or have special needs.
We will be collecting old blankets, towels, animal beds, cat litter, pet food, and animal toys. This is a great opportunity to clean out your linen closets and cabinets, and help out deserving animals at the same time. Please help us help them during this event. All donations can be dropped off in the Extended Day office in the cafeteria.
Thank you for any help and donations you can give us.
