Puerto Ricans were hit by Hurricane Maria on September 20, 2017 and were left with a fierce humanitarian crisis.
As Puerto Ricans, with the help of other Americans (and people from all over the world) continue to rebuild their economy today, the question remains, ”what type of society do Puerto Ricans want to become, and who is Puerto Rico for?” (Carmen Yulin Cruz, Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico)
During the trip to Puerto Rico, participants will seek answers to these essential questions while working with CARAS con Causa on environmental and urban development projects. CARAS is an innovative nonprofit organization that coordinates educational projects to promote environmental development in partnership with communities in Puerto Rico.
While in Puerto Rico, participants will explore the following:
Learn about environmental hazards affecting Puerto Rico’s beaches and mangroves
Meet with local workers and activists, and learn to advocate for the environment
Visit El Yunque Rainforest, local beaches, Old San Juan, local schools and estates
Understand local and political activism among Puerto Rican leaders to combat colonial and economic policies
