Salem Heights Elementary

A Message about our Principals!

Greetings Salem Heights families!

We have an announcement to make: the district has assigned Risa James as the permanent principal at Salem Heights starting this fall! Our school is excited to know the future of our administrative staff and thankful to keep someone we have come to know and work with so well. We are appreciative to have had the support of Alan deMeurers this year during our principal transition and will miss having him on the team next school year.

Our Rascal Spirit has stayed bright throughout this year, despite all of the obstables we have faced. We are so proud of our amazing team of staff, students, and families! There are only a few weeks left before summer break; we plan to pack them full of fun and learning to finish the year strong!

Go Rascals!

Campus Closed for Bondwork COnstruction June 18 - August 29

Big picture

Our school is undergoing the first phase of bond-work constrution this summer! Our hope was that all phases would be completed this summer and into the fall, but due to the unavailabliity of contractors the second phase has been delayed until summer of 2023.

This summer's work will include adding a new bus lane and parking lots (in yellow above), changing out our currect portable classrooms for a new modular building (in green above), seizmic improvements (in pink above), and some from entry renovations.

Next summer, the interior work in blue, purple and orange above will take place.

During renovations our campus will be closed to staff and public from June 18- August 30th. The Salem Heights Office staff will be relocating to Leslie Middle School during that time. We will still be able to recieve phone calls at our normal number (503-399-3187), but visits from our families will need to take place at:

Leslie Middle School

3850 Pringle Rd SE, Salem, OR 97302

There will be signage near the entrance to direct you to our area.

COVID-19 Test Kits: A note from the district

Salem-Keizer Parents/Guardians,

The district was informed by Oregon Health Authority (OHA) that all schools will be recieiving free COVID-19 test kits to send home with each student. Salem Heights has recieved our kits, and we sent them home with students this Friday, 5-27-22 (5th grade students at Outdoor School will recieve their kits next week). These kits are sent as a courtesy by OHA and families are not obligated to use or keep them.

If you have questions, please contact our office at 503-399-3187.

Last Day for Lost and Found

Our lost and found is overflowing! On June 15th we will be displaying all of our remaining lost and found items from this school year. All items will be on tables under the covered area, near our main entrance. After that date all items will be donated.

Families are welcome to stop by the school before that date to check through the lost and found. Office hours are 7:00am-3:30pm.

Medications Stored in Office

Many of our familes have checked medications into the office throughout the school year. The last day for families to pick those up is June 16th. That afternoon all medications (aside from rescue meds such as inhalers, epi pens, and anti-seizure medication) will be disposed of. Our office team is moving to Leslie Middle School while Salem Heights is under construction this summer, so there will be no access to our medication cabinet after June 16th until we return August 30th.

Get to know your PTC!

Join us in the Salem Heights library for an in-person PTC meeting Thursday, June 9th, at 6:00pm.

If you would prefer to join online, Click here to join the meeting.

The PTC organizes and funds a wide variety of programs to support the school and its students. One of the main programs we fund are school field trips. We also encourage community through our family nights, supplement academics with an art literacy program and make sure teachers have the supplies they need in the classroom.

Every project, event and program the PTC does, only happens because of volunteers. We need your help to make these things happen. Until December volunteer opportunities are limited, but we would love to hear from you if you are willing to volunteer when things open back up.

Volunteering can be as much or as little as you want, in whatever you are interested in. You can come a little early and help set-up an event, or you could lead a whole new program, there is something for everyone.

If you are interested feel free to email us admin@salemheightsptc.org, visit our website for more info, find us on Facebook, or join our next meeting June 9th 6:00pm in the Salem Heights Library, or online: Click here to join the meeting

Rascal Reward- Field Day!

Our students have been working this year at showing their "PAWS"! This stands for

  • Practicing Responsibilty
  • Achieving Greatness
  • With Respect
  • Self Control

When staff catch students showing these positive behaviors we recognise them with a PAWS ticket. These are collected in the office toward an all-school Rascal Reward when the tank is full. The reward we are currently working toward an all school Field Day!

SAFEOREGON. FEEL SAFE. BE SAFE.

Safe Oregon – Report confidential safety concerns

Salem-Keizer Public Schools partners with SafeOregon, a confidential tip line that gives students, parents, schools and communities a confidential way to report safety threats or potential acts of violence.

ALL STUDENTS PREPARED TO GRADUATE

In 2010, Oregon adopted higher K-12 standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics to ensure that all students move from a grade to a degree with the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. Because we raise the bar for what we expect students to know and be able to do, we have also changed the way we measure student progress through our state tests.

THINK BEFORE YOU POST!

Recently, schools across the Salem-Keizer School District have experienced an increase in school threats, rumors of threats, and the spread of false information, which has been disrupting our learning environments and creating fear in the community.

MENTAL HEALTH AND SELF-CARE

As we enter the winter months, it's important to check-in and ensure we are taking care of ourselves. SKPS has collected a few important resources to support mental health and self-care strategies. Remember, self-care is not selfish, it is self respect.
