TOP STORY #1: National Merit Commended Students
Principal Dr. Alexander announced last week that two H-F seniors — Faye Wettstein (above left) and Fatima Hernandez (above right) — have been named Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented to the students later this month. Approximately 34,000 Commended Students across the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last school year. Both students are studying as part of H-F’s Class of 2023 International Baccalaureate cohort. Fatima also takes Project Lead the Way Engineering classes, and Faye also studies AP Art History and Ceramics/Sculpture at H-F. Congratulations, Vikings!

Go, Vikings!
Operation Snowball: Overnight once again!
Offered at H-F since 1981, Operation Snowball is a weekend experience provided for H-F students to build confidence, help them be a positive influence on each other, share accurate information for decisions about their lives and "help healthy kids stay healthy." It is founded on the belief that with accurate information and an understanding of one’s self, every person has the ability to make sound decisions regarding his or her life. It is a program focusing on prevention through educational growth by promoting personal social development. It emphasizes the benefits of sharing feelings and thoughts with each other. Grade 9-12 teens participate in large group sessions, mini workshops and small groups in which feelings and concerns may be openly discussed in a confidential atmosphere. It is an experience you will never forget! This year Snowball will run Nov. 17-20 at Camp Manitoqua in Frankfort. Staff director is Mrs. Maul, H-F school counselor; teen directors are Phoebe Bosch, Jada Marsh, Mary Holland, Haley Harrington & Amelia Wachtel (pictured above, l. to rt.). Early Registration is open now through Oct. 7 ($110); Regular Registration will run Oct. 8-22 ($135); and Late Registration will run Oct. 23-26 ($160).

H-F Debate in the Golden State

Our H-F debaters did not disappoint; everyone took home a trophy! Senior Lincoln Douglas debater Peyton Jackson debated about whether the U.S. should have a single-payer healthcare system. She finished 8th Place speaker and 11th seed. She made it to the octafinals and lost on a tough 2-1 decision. Public Forum debaters senior Mickey McGrory and sophomore Everett Van Til debated if the U.S. should invest in high speed rail. They finished in the top 3rd of the tournament. These 2nd year debaters advanced to elimination rounds, losing to the No. 2 team at the tournament in a 3-0 decision. The team is coached by Mrs. Cole, English teacher.
