Moving to Restorative Practices at Layton Elementary
As administrators, we have experience every day working with children who have difficulties with behavior, just like you do in the classroom. At our level, we see students you have tried to work with who continue to cause problems for others. We know that suspending children is a very unproductive practice, even though at times it is necessary. We are educators, though, so we would rather try teaching good behavior rather than punishing bad behavior.
We have found The Restorative Justice Handbook for Teachers, Disciplinarians, and Administrators, by Costello, Wachtel, and Wachtel (2009) to be helpful in plotting a course for establishing Restorative Practices at Layton Elementary. This is where we would like to start and want you to also have these tools as you deal with infractions in the classroom. If we all use the same language, we will model Restorative Thinking in our school. Please see below for a video of how one teacher does great things in her classroom with Dialogue Circles. Some of you are already doing this, but she has some new twists I haven't seen before.
Restorative Questions to Use with the Student's Challenging Behavior
- What happened?
- What were you thinking at the time? (Don't use your mother's tone of voice!)
- What have you thought about since?
- Who has been affected by what you have done? In what way have they been affected?
- What do you think you need to do to make things right?
To Help Those Affected by the Challenging Behavior
- What did you think when you realized what had happened?
- What impact has this incident had on you and others?
- What has been the hardest thing for you?
- What do you think needs to happen to make things right?
