The Broad Street Counselor
Updates on School Counseling at Broad Street Elementary
April 2021
We have been in the 4-day model for a few weeks now and the Broad Street students are really enjoying the additional time to learn and socialize with their classmates. Spring is definitely here and this time of new beginnings feels very symbolic. With all of the changes in the schedule and students coming to school more frequently, it feels like March 15th was a fresh start.
April is typically the month in our school counseling program where we focus on conflict resolution and problem-solving techniques. Our Broad Street students and families have had to overcome a lot of obstacles this year and use these strategies more often than in a typical year. Please take some time to talk to your students about how you deal with conflict in your life, so that our students can see this is an essential lifelong skill and that it is important to communicate with respect and use problem-solving skills even when they become adults. You can see below for a visual that explains why conflict resolution is S.W.E.E.T.
As always, let me know if you need any support. Feel free to send me an email to set up a time to connect via phone or Zoom!
Counseling Lesson: Problem-Solving
This month my lessons focus on how conflict resolution can be S.W.E.E.T by using these steps: say how you feel, wait for the other person to share, engage in win-win brainstorming, elect a solution, and turn a new page.

From our Elementary School Social Worker, Megan Garrison:
“MASD will be offering Free Meals for students until the end of the 2020-2021 school year. If your student/family is in need of additional resources such as food, clothing, or hygiene products, please contact your student’s school counselor or the elementary school social worker for additional support. Your child’s school counselor will be in touch with more details following your response.”
