Senior Academy Laptop Information
Senior Academy One-to-One Computing FAQ
Mark your calendar now for the Class of 2019 parent/student laptop webinar that will be sent out on July 23rd, 2018. This webinar will also have an electronic confirmation document that will need to be completed prior to a student receiving his/her laptop. This webinar will include information pertaining to our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), Social Media Policy, insurance options, and expectations regarding appropriate use of technology.
How will computers be used in the Senior Academy?
Students will learn in a variety of ways using computers including:
· Taking notes in OneNote, a Microsoft business application
· Producing multimedia presentations
· Using their school-issued e-mail account for collaboration and communication with faculty members and other students
· Turning in assignments to be graded electronically
· Getting back assignments that have been graded electronically
· Taking quizzes and tests
· Storing/accessing documents on Microsoft OneDrive (no flash drives allowed)
· Creating web pages
· Reading documents
· Blogging
· Evaluating content
· Doing research
Student may bring a laptop or tablet from home that meets school specifications, or students can rent a laptop from BHS. The rental laptop will be a Dell E6420 and rental cost will be $102.64 for the school year as a part of book rental. The same textbook rental adjustments for families on free and reduced textbook rental apply to the laptop program.
Computers from home:
What specifications are required for a student-owned computer?
· Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 (Startup or Basic version will not allow access to school network)
· 1 gig memory minimum (2 to 4 gig preferred)
· Wireless G (minimum) or N (preferred)
· Brand name which parents can get serviced
· School must be allowed to install wireless access key on computer for network access and school-required software including VMWare View.
What additional school-required software does a student-owned computer need?
The computer must have up-to-date virus protection software.
What about IPads or Tablets?
With new technology, IPads and tablets have become a popular item. In our wireless environment, IPad and tablets are limited in the areas of connectivity and productivity. IPads and tablets will not connect directly with our network. Many of the applications on the IPad or tablet will not connect directly to the internet and some applications will not update while on campus. IPad minis and Chromebooks are NOT acceptable.
What will we do if our student-owned laptop has to be repaired?
Personal laptops are the responsibility of the owners. We will have computers available for a daily rental fee of $5/day.
Common Q.A. with Rental laptops
What are the steps for renting a laptop?
1. The rental laptop is $102.64 for the school year. You must view a webinar that will be sent out to all parents on July 23rd. An electronic document will accompany this webinar and must be completed prior to a student receiving a laptop when they register for school on July 21st or July 24th. Note: If your child qualifies for free or reduced textbook rental, please make sure your paperwork is current for free and reduced lunch.
2. The Senior Academy will require parents to furnish a protected computer case or a backpack with a protected sleeve for the computer. The laptop dimensions are 11” x 9 ¼” x 2.” This bag or backpack must be brought to registration in order to receive the rental laptop.
What about insurance?
Parents are encouraged to check about insurance coverage through homeowner's or rental policies. Student Insurance Partners has provided an optional policy in the last two years and we anticipate the company will offer a program again. In the past, the premium ranged from $35-$41 with the deductible ranging from $25-$100 depending on the premium level.
What will we do if our rental laptop has to be repaired?
We will repair BCSC owned laptops and a loaner laptop will be issued to the student to use during the time of repair. The repair costs for damages caused by the student, such as a cracked screen, could fall to the students. The breakdown of repair costs will be included in the laptop webinar. Servicing such as reimaging due to violations of the Acceptable Use Policy will result in a charge. Damage beyond student control due to equipment malfunction, such as a hard drive crash, would not result in a charge.
Am I able to purchase the rental laptop?
There is no rent-to-own program associated with the Senior Academy.
The laptop webinar will be posted on July 23rd on the Team 2019 webpage. Information in the webinar must be viewed by parents and students prior to registration. All items pertaining to the transition to the Senior Academy and the Class of 2019 will also be posted at: https://www.brownsburg.k12.in.us/Team-2019
