The Weekly Howl
St. Francis Catholic School - Saturday, September 14th
Dear Parents & Friends of SFCS,
In this edition of the Howl you will find the updated SFCS Calendar Overview for the 2019-2020 school year. Since we lost 4 days last week due to Hurricane Dorian we have 4 dates that have been changed on the calendar.
- Monday, October 21st - This will be a Virtual Day for the students while the teachers will be attending their 2nd Diocesan CIP Conference for the year.
- Monday, February 10th - This will be a Virtual Day for the students while the teachers will be attending their 3rd Diocesan CIP Conference for the year.
- Friday, February 21st - This will be extended to a full day of school.
- Monday, April 6th - This will be a Virtual Day for the students while the teachers will be attending their 4th Diocesan CIP Conference for the year.
- Wednesday, April 8th - This will be extended to a full day of school with Grandparent's Day activities moved to the afternoon.
More information regarding the Virtual Days and schedule changes for Grandparent's Day will be communicated in the future.
Tomorrow is our first 9:00am School Family Mass of the year! This is an awesome way for our students and school community to show gratitude and illustrate our presence to our supportive parish community. Please attend if you are able and we strongly encourage students to wear their mass uniform. Students in grade 3 and above that would like to sing in the choir must be in the church and report to Mrs. Sweeney in the choir section by 8:40am. Hope to see many of you there!
Coming soon is the annual Lowcountry Community Dinner for Catholic Education. This is a wonderful event to celebrate Catholic school education in our area. This year SFCS will be celebrating and recognizing Mrs. Markey's and Mrs. MacDonald's 15 years of service as a faculty member of SFCS! All parents are welcome to attend. More information is on the flyer below. If you would like to come and the cost of the ticket is preventing you to purchase a ticket then we will accept discounted donations to attend. Tickets can be purchased in the school office with Mrs. Markey.
Have a wonderful remainder to your weekend.
Sincerely in Christ,
Brian Pope
Principal

The fifth graders have been studying the Nicene Creed in religion. They worked in groups and created posters of different parts of the Nicene Creed.
Discovery Lab (PreK and K)
This week students looked at images of shapes and created two dimensional models using only toothpicks and Playdough. The shapes advanced from triangles, squares, and rectangles, to a parallelogram, rhombus, and pentagon. They counted the numbers of vertices in each shape in order to make the correct number of Play Dough spheres and decided the amount of small and large toothpicks pieces they needed to construct the figures. Students worked very hard to make accurate, neat, and aesthetically pleasing models. They enjoyed the construction and asked if we could make more difficult models. Stay tuned to see their 3D creations next week!
Discovery Lab (1st - 3rd))
This week student partners refined the methods they used last class to see how large a paper chain they could make using only two sheets of construction paper and ten inches of tape. Making a long chain was fun but more important lessons were learned about the benefits and limitations of specific use of materials. For example, delicate links made very long chains but they were weak and difficult to keep together. Sturdy chains held together well but used a large amount of available material very quickly. We discovered that delicate chains would be desirable for jewelry and sturdy ones would have industrial uses. Long, thin and delicate chains did meet the challenge but would have limitations in the real world while sturdy chains would be very desirable for many real world applications.

Knights of Columbus Tip-Off Volleyball Classic Update
Unfortunately, Hurricane Dorian arrived when we were to have our annual volleyball tournament. Mr. Benning has been in contact with all of the schools involved and because we are in the middle of the season and schedules are set, he was not been able to get enough teams that are able to play in the tournament at this time. He is extremely disappointed as I'm sure the players and coaches are. We'll try again next year.
DOCYVT Update
Volleyball Parents,
Attached are the parent forms for the Diocese of Charleston Youth Volleyball Tournament (DOCYVT) that will be held on October 19 & 20 at Greenville High School. They are as follows:

- Permission/Waiver Form (All three pages must be signed and returned)
- Code of Conduct (Must be signed and returned)

In order to get the rosters and fees sent to Greenville by the reservation date, please note that all forms are due to me no later than Friday, September 20. There will be no exceptions. If the required forms are not in by that date, you will not be rostered for the tournament.
Mr. Misko is working on hotel reservations and we will contact you at a later date with that information.

Spirit Day Thursday, September 19th
We are encouraging students to "wear gold" for this spirit day for a minimum recommended donation of $2.00. No canned goods this time please. We are also encouraging students to wear gold or SFCS yellow since gold is the color for childhood cancer awareness. All other uniform policies regarding spirit days still applies.
CURE Childhood Cancer is an organization uses money raised to go back directly to assist families experiencing having a child with cancer. This is the same organization that our friend Michelle in Kindergarten likes to support. Last year Michelle was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and currently going through treatment.
