Welcome to Oak Hills Junior High School

Good afternoon parents of Oak Hills JH Lions. To our new 6th graders and any new 7th or 8th graders, I am Mr. Williams your campus Principal and this will be the longest email you will ever receive from me this school year. To our returning students, I can’t wait to see you all back on campus! I hope that you have found ways to enjoy your summer with family and friends. We are not far from the start of what will be an amazing school year! Be sure to read to the end for a couple of important need to knows!

This year we are going to have our APs and Counselors work with kids by their last names. All 6th, 7th, and 8th graders with a last name starting in A-K will work with Mrs. Newton as their AP and Mrs. Morris as their Counselor. All 6th, 7th, and 8th graders with a last name starting with L-Z will work with Mr. Whitehead and Mrs. Shefchik. Do not hesitate to reach out to any of us with any questions and we will get you to the right person!

We have a number of things in the works for when we are able to return to face-to-face instruction:

  • A blocked schedule for fewer transitions during the school day
  • One direction hallways and one direction stairways
  • Staggered dismissal times between classes and at the end of the day
  • 4 lunch periods for smaller numbers during lunches to help spread out seats
  • Hand sanitizing stations at entrance/exit doors
  • Hand sanitizer in classrooms
  • Use of face-shields and face coverings by staff and students per Governor Abbott’s Executive Order
  • Staff having access to supplies to clean high-touch and working surfaces w/ a non-wipe spray
  • Nightly cleaning and disinfecting of classrooms
  • Extra cleaning of common areas w/ extended classroom time
  • Closed campus procedures (regarding visitors to the campus and during lunches)
We will continue to work on things to ensure the safety of our students and our staff for when we can return to face-to-face instruction. Right now, our focus is on providing premium, online instruction for the first few weeks of the school year. The most asked question that I hear from our parents right now is, “what is going to be different with the start of school online compared to the end of the school year last year”. I think I can best sum that up by saying accountability. Teachers will be giving grades with expectations for completed work and participation. With the blocked schedule our students and teachers will only have four periods each day w/ more than 90 minutes in each of their four classes that day. While working remotely, that is time for teachers to connect with students online and cover instruction. That also allows time for teachers to record and load lessons so that students who cannot access live instruction during the day can access instruction in the evenings. The district is going above and beyond to ensure technology will be there and our staff is going above and beyond to create and deliver exceptional classroom instruction remotely. A couple of need to knows…

  • Class schedules can be picked up Thursday from 5pm to 7pm or Friday from 9am to 11am. Last name A-K go through the car rider line and last name L-Z go through the bus rider line.
    • Anyone schedule not picked up by Friday at 11am will be put in Friday’s mail to be delivered to you at home.
    • The schedules will also include important log-in information for remote learning.
  • We are working out the logistics to help those who might need a laptop. We will contact you in the next few days regarding laptops.
  • If you ordered school supplies, you can come and pick them up on Monday, August 10th, or we can hold them until your child returns for face-to-face instruction.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say that none of this is what any of us want or have asked for. I do not believe that there is a perfect plan for what we are dealing with, educationally speaking right now. What I do know is that we have amazing students, we have amazing teachers, and we have amazing parents! I know that when we all work together, no matter the circumstances, we will do amazing things this school year!
