In The Middle
A newsletter to and for the parents of CLMS - 12/7/18
Message from the Principal
Howdy Folks,
My phrase for reflection today is "space for correction".
Our middle school kids need lots of things. One of these is space for correction. Our most successful teachers have learned that when we are dealing with the misbehavior or a mistake it is best not to stand on the edge of the hole they have just dug for themselves and lecture them. That might make us feel better, but I'm not sure it is of any real value. It works well to help them figure a way out, offer a hand up, help them own the problem, take the consequence, find a solution, and then repair the damage to the relationships that often results from these situations.
Disclaimer. We, the adults, are not perfect. You won't get this right every time but it is a pretty good goal.
We are all in this together.

Lakes Free Church After School Programming
A small number of kids are going to the church, hanging out, and then leaving. When they do this they are not supervised at all. Some of them have gone back to the Chisago Lakes High School and that is not an acceptable option. The schools are not staffed to supervise kids after school who are not in school activities. If they do that they will get in trouble.
As a professional worrier, there are about a billion bad things that can happen when kids are not supervised. The bigger issue to me, as a parent, would be that my child is gaming the system. The blunt version of this is, if your child is willing to be dishonest about where they are and what they are doing, there is a pretty good chance is not a great choice in the first place.
This would be a good opportunity for you to visit with your child about your expectations of them.

News from the CLMS Health Office
Why?
- Some of our kids are coming to the health office to use their phones when they are not allowed to do so in other places. This takes up the time of our health room staff.
- Our kids in the health office are not having the best day of their lives and they do not need others taking pictures and making post about who is in the health office. Not cool.
If your kiddo is sick and needs to contact you we will let them use their phone to text or call under the direction of health office staff. Let me know if you have any questions. This is new and we will adjust as it makes sense to do so. Let me know what you think.
