Freak the Mighty
Written By: Rodman Philbrick
Summary
Kevin is brilliant, but his body isn’t growing and he wears braces on his legs. Max is huge and powerful, but he has been so scarred by life that he feels dumb and worthless. Independently, each boy seems like half a person, but when they meet the summer before eighth grade starts, they join together, becoming inseparable friends as Freak the Mighty.
This novel tells the story of one defining year in the boys’ lives. As a team, the boys go on a bunch of adventures and seem to overcome every obstacle in their path. Then, Max finally has to confront the memory of his mother's death, and Freak has to overcome his physical limitations. Both of these come to a head when Killer Kane kidnaps Max and Freak rescues him. As the plot moves along, each boy must face his inevitable fate; that is, Max must meet his convict father eventually and Kevin must face death.
