Message from Geordie

Good afternoon St Bernie’s,

A very exciting afternoon today with our St Bernie’s dance troop off to perform at the Catholic performing arts concert. Students from Years 4 to 6 have been working very hard after school on Wednesday’s and are excited and ready to go. I would like to put a HUGE shoutout to Mrs Jess Tanner who has been giving up her own time while on maternity leave to practice with our students. This sort of dedication and enthusiasm is what makes our community so strong. I would also like to acknowledge all our staff who have being staying back to support Jess with the performance – it is going to be a great night!

I would like to congratulate our Year 4 students who will be making their First Holy Communion this weekend. They have been working very hard with their teachers and peers to learn and prepare for the Sacrament and I look forward to celebrating with them this weekend. Thanks to Mrs Hilton and Mrs Roberts for preparing them so well.

This week I had a few conversations that highlighted the importance of respectful relationships in building and maintaining a strong community here at St Bernadette’s. I really believe that every interaction is an opportunity to build a positive culture within our school and model our school values of Kindness, Honesty and Respect. Every conversation, especially difficult ones, should be respectful and mindful that we are all working towards a common goal – to help and support our students and children to become good people in a big, wide world.

Before school one day this week I had a conversation with a Mum about something that had happened at recess the day before. This was a difficult conversation for her to have; however, she was honest, kind, and calm and it was obvious that she wanted the best for all the students involved. These are important discussions to have, and it is important that we hold each other to account in the way we speak and act in these moments.

Finally, for those who haven’t heard, we celebrated Science this week with a huge puff of smoke and a BANG! We are so lucky to have such a fun, hands-on and vibrant Science program here at St Bernie’s and it was great to see our students come bounding out of school on Wednesday after their Science Incursion. I have had a steady stream of students come to tell me how much they enjoyed it. Big thanks again to Mrs Murphy for organising!

Well, that is it from me. I am catching the train in with my family to see the concert tonight so I might see you there!

Enjoy the weekend and we will see you next week.

Making Jesus Real at St Bernies!

Last week, Gabriella G in Year 6B was the recipient of our MJR Award,

Science Week: Science Alive Incursion

On Wednesday, the school were treated to a science-tastic show by clever company, Supersonic Science!

We were blown away (literally) with exciting experiments from colourful flames to elephant toothpaste and from clouds of smoke to covering some poor children with toilet paper (unused!).

However, we did think it was a wee bit drastic when they set poor Mrs Murphy on fire!

We were all very entertained and thank Mrs Murphy for organising such a super duper fun incursion!

Readathon August 2021

The month of August is MS Readathon Month. This very worthwhile cause encourages children to read whatever they would like and in doing so raise money for multiple sclerosis.

Parents can log into and register their child/ren to participate in the readathon simply by going to this site:

https://www.msreadathon.org.au

While this is a chance for fundraising, it is up to parents if they wish to participate in the fundraising

At School we will support the students in their reading, during library and in their classroom. As we all know reading is a fundamental skill in learning and the school is hoping lots of our students will join in.
