MISSION
A Note from your Principal
Dear West Newton families,
What a wonderful beginning to our school year at West Newton Elementary! Thank you for the ways that each of you collaborate with the West Newton staff in supporting your student’s learning and growth. Student-Led Conference Day is set for Oct. 2 and each of you should have received a letter asking for the best time to meet and share your child’s current learning progress. Teachers will finalize their schedules within the next week and on Sept. 23 you will receive a confirmation letter for your conference time. This is one of my favorite times of the school year because we get to see all of our family members with their students, the Book Fair will be open, and the school is a busy, happy place to be! Please note that our Book Fair will be open Sept. 25-Oct. 2 so be sure to join us for our famous Lunch with Someone You Love dates and shop the Book Fair with your child. Literacy Night at the Book Fair is scheduled for Wed., Sept. 25 from 5:30-7:00pm and we are inviting the entire community to enjoy this fun event. Even though we don’t have school on Oct. 2 due to student-led conferences the Book Fair will be open all day and in to the evening so that everyone gets the opportunity to choose some new books to enjoy over Fall Break. As always, thank you for sharing your child with us!
With Tiger Pride,
Mrs. Strube
Gym News
From the gym…
August was a great month in the gym! We learned, reviewed, and practiced the rules in the gym, whistle cues, and expectations – and NON-expectations! Practicing the wrong way to line up, enter the gym, and treat peers made everyone laugh, but was a great reminder of the better choices we can make every day.
Skills that we worked on in August were running, chasing, fleeing and tagging while playing games like Sharks and Minnows, Color Tag, and Pacman Tag. Another skill that students worked on was throwing a ball with accuracy while playing Skittles. The 4th, 5th and 6th grade classes did their first of three assessment days (the other two will be in January and May), which included timing a five-lap run, and pushups and sit ups for one minute each. Their goal is to show improvement from August to May in each event. Finally, several classes are learning new cool down games, such as Quiet Ball and Wink.
Next month, in September, we’ll be focusing on the skills used in Kickball and Field Hockey. It’ll be SO much fun!!!
Last, but not least, if you ever have a concern or just want to chat, please call me here at school (317-856-5237) and I’m happy to get back with you as soon as possible. Thank you for sharing your greatest treasures with me! I’m honored and humbled by your trust!

ART SUPPLY LIST
Parents, the Art Supply List that was sent home is only if you are so inclined to donate to our art room. We do not expect you to purchase these items to be used in the art room, but we certainly do appreciate any and all donations of these items to support our art program for all students.
Students in grades 4-6 do need an Art Sketchbook and those can be purchased from our school bookstore for $2 or you could also purchase them at Meijer, Wal-Mart or any dollar store. Thank you so much!

Decatur Township Library Cards
Decatur Township has entered into a partnership with the Indianapolis Public Library. Through this partnership, every year we provide the library with a list of our students, and they match the list with their database of patrons. If a student does not currently have a library card, they will be issued one. This program has been very successful in our schools and in other districts in Indianapolis.
The special card students receive will give them access to all of the library’s digital materials, such as databases of magazine and journal articles, downloadable ebooks, emagazines and audio books. In addition, it will give them very limited access to physical items, such as regular books. Of course, you can change this to a full access card by visiting your library. This is an outstanding opportunity for your student. If for any reason you do not wish for your child to participate, please contact our school office for paperwork to opt out.
Any questions or concerns about the program can be directed to Lynn Hodgkin, Elementary Media Coordinator, at 317-856-2221.
