Volume 1, Issue 28 - March 16, 2018
As we work with our students, we see that many of the problems they have emanate from interactions and postings in Snapchat, which is ranked as the second worst social media platform for teen mental health. I want to invite you to either watch this video or read the article (same information) to learn about how Snapchat works, and the dangers this social media app presents for your student.
As always, it is not about removing access to things that might be harmful for your student, but about being informed as a parent about how you can help them, and setting healthy boundaries. These are some recommendations mentioned in the article I am sharing:
- Become a Snapchat expert so you can be involved with your student on the app and keep them safe
- Know your child’s username, follow them, get involved, have discussions, and monitor their Snaps
- If your student can easily navigate the new update, make them the expert and have them teach you more about the app
- Show your student that anything they post on social media (including Snapchat) has the ability to last forever
- Demonstrate the ways that negative posts can come back to hurt their reputation in the future
- Remind your teen that it’s okay to be silly and have fun on social media as long as they are positive (with a little bit of gratitude)
Administration Changes
While Mr. Drennan steps out of the classroom, Rachel Smith will teacher his English Language Arts classes. Mr. Drennan will still be responsible for his AVID section.
Please, help us welcome Ms. Smith to Gentry and congratulate Mr. Drennan!
From the Nurse
If you have an incoming 8th grader for fall 2018, it is required that the health office has documentation of their Tdap and meningitis vaccines. If they have not had these immunizations, they will need to get them prior to summer school or fall schedule pickup.
Please see the attached flier.
