The Family of Believers
The phrase We are a family of believers in Jesus Christ appears in our vision statement. It’s a wonderful way to think of how we relate to each other in the body of Christ. According to our recent vision survey, it’s also the top reason many people love Crossroads UMC. Your church is a warm, caring, loving family-like place to be.
This a good strength to have in a church! When we hear the gospel, confess our sin, and place our faith Jesus Christ, "we are born into God’s kingdom as his children and become heirs with him for eternity."(Romans 8:14-17). We are brothers and sisters in the faith. The family of faith should take our relationship with God and each other seriously.
I want to encourage us to build on this good foundation in the next few months with a new project. It’s called the attendance board. You will see it appear this month in the Communication Center.
First, we will post an accurate list of church family members. Over the last few months, I’ve developed a list of 214 active worshipers in our church, most of whom are already on our official list of 421 members. Now that Easter and Christmas are over, I feel like we have a good list of active folks. The list may change occasionally, but you’ll be able to review it for yourself each week on the bulletin board display. Please don’t get mad if I left you off the list, we ‘ve struggled with our database and sometimes the names don’t print correctly. Trust me, we'll add you because I want the list be really long!
Secondly, we’re going to take worship attendance more seriously. We won't be calling your name out loud, but a couple of people will be checking attendance off the master list during worship. Worship matters to God. Worship matters to you. If you aren’t worshipping, then your spiritual life suffers. Part of my responsibly and the responsibility of our family of believers is to be concerned when one of our family members isn’t worshipping. We’re not taking attendance to make you feel bad, but we’re doing it to care for the family.
Thirdly, when you miss worship three weeks in a row, then we’ll share your contact information on attendance board. This contact card will be available for your church friends to follow up with you. This is where the family of faith shows its best care for others. It's a check in opportunity.
Fourthly, this is nothing new. The Methodist church was founded on “methods” of accountability for spiritual growth. When John Wesley formed early Methodist societies, they were small groups that asked focused questions about each other’s lives. Now that congregations like ours have 200+ active worshipping members, it’s far more difficult to follow up. Nevertheless, a family of faith should look for ways to reach out and care.
I’m hopeful that this new system will help our “family of believers” inspire more growth and outreach in our ministries. I also believe it will help us tighten the ties that bind our church together.
Peace,
