Japanese Encephalitis

Is a virus that is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable encephalitis in Asia and western Pacific.

It is when a human has been bitten by an infected mosquito. They would have symptoms such as, a headache, high fever, disorientation, coma, tremors and convulsions. About 1 in 4 cases are fatal.

There is really no treatment for this, patient management focuses on supportive care and management of complications.

What can you do to prevent this?

Be sure to be protective when you are in these countries, be sure to spray yourself and wear long sleeve clothes to prevent from getting these bites. Make sure that you are able to wear this spray at all times. When you are traveling, be sure you watch your surroundings because some people can spread it to you if they are carrying this mosquito with them.

What to expect when you come home?

Make sure that you are noticing if there are any bite marks that you have on yourself. Be sure to spray yourself and take a shower fully to be able to see if you have this disease. There will usually be more symtoms that come along with this other than just noticing these bite marks. Just check over yourself and make sure you are in healthy conditions.
