Message from the Leadership Team
During the ACE Conference Claire Valier presented "I'm Teaching - Are My Students Learning?" The root of what Claire shared revolved around what teachers do, work hard planning instruction that will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary. With the frameworks in hand we get to know our students and establish learning goals to meet their needs.
But, sometimes, we get so caught up in the planning and teaching we forget to share the learning goals with our students. Students need to know and understand what our goal of learning is for the day, how this goal connects with what we have already learned, and how this goal connects with where we will go tomorrow. As with all good teaching, ensuring what students know and are able to do involves monitoring.
Taking the time to monitor students understanding doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Often, its taking a step back and observing. Are my students engaged in the learning goal? Do they understand the learning goal? Will they be able to apply this learning goal on their own?
In other circumstances, we may monitor the learning goal by asking students to highlight key words, restate it in their own words, share it with a partner, or simply paraphrase the goal. Taking a few minutes to monitor student understanding of the learning goal could be compared to taking our students on a field trip, we wouldn’t want to take off on the ride without ensuring that all the students are on the bus with us.
