From the Principal's Desk
May 1st is here! The rainy weather has us stuck inside a lot lately, and we are hoping we do not float away! As soon as the skies clear and the sun pops out we are ready to get back outside and enjoy the amazing Spring weather. It was fantastic to see everyone last Friday at the GBE Spring Wellness Event. Coach Taylor and our Student Wellness Warriors worked so hard to organize and see out this event for our community. I know Coach has some great plans for next year's event!
Thank you to everyone who helped with the success of this night!
We are finishing up the majority of MAP testing after this week. This week our students are focused on assessing the Math portion of the MAP test. Thank you for making sure they were bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to go to show their stuff these weeks of testing this last month. Our kids have worked hard and had great stamina through the testing window.
We will have our last iReady round for the Spring Benchmark starting the week of May 13th. This gives the kids a break and only make ups done for MAP the week prior. We know that this time of year can feel like a lot of assessing and wanted to break it up for them and take our time.
With May here, there are many events planned for the end of the year. I sent out a list of dates allowing you to have this in time to save the date for all upcoming events. I will include this again in this newsletter. There are a few small adjustments and additions. Please do call if you have any questions.

News for Next School Year:
I would like to take time in this last newsletter to deliver some news regarding changes at GBE next year. As some of you may know, we will have new faces in the office area and several of our classrooms.
We have worked hard this year to fill the spots of those that are moving on from us to different roles within the district or in a different district/state. At the end of May, I will send out our current Teachers for the 19-20 School Year.
With life comes changes and adjustments, and at this time I wanted to say "thank you" to each of you as I have come to the end of my fourth year with GBE as principal. I have learned so much from each of you and your children.
Looking to next year, I will not be at GBE in this role. I have accepted a position back in the KC area with Park Hill School District. My move there will be one that is as an assistant principal in one of their elementary K-5 buildings. While this is a bittersweet move for me, it is an exciting opportunity that benefits my family. Again, know that I will miss my time here and the sweet faces that are the reasons we come to GBE every day.
We will also have a change in the role for our assistant principal at GBE. Mr. Samuel will be in the district as the new North Park principal. He is excited to be making this move, and looks forward to his role and working with each of our families in the district.
We still have several weeks until our time at GBE is closing, and Mr. Samuel and I both plan on making sure we are doing our best to end this school year preparing for next year.
Again, thank you for sharing your kiddos with us each day! We treasure each moment we have been able to be a part of their experiences at GBE.

Title I News
**Breakfast with Books will be Friday, May 3 from 7:45-8:05. Come join us for ideas to keep your child reading throughout the summer. At 8:05, parents with their children may visit the GBE Spring Scholastic Book Fair. Books are “BOGO”, buy one get one free (at the same price). We hope to see you there.
Focus of the Month: Preventing the Summer Slide
Have you heard the term “summer reading slide”? During the summer, many students experience a loss of skills and material learned over the school year. If they don’t “use it” then they “lose it”. The good news is that we can prevent the summer slide. There are lots of literacy activities that we can do over the summer with our kids to help them practice (in a fun way!) all the things they have learned.
● Going on a trip? Find a book set in that location to read while you travel there!
● Curl up with a book in different spots inside and outside your home and rate each reading spot on a scale of one to five. At the end of the summer, review your ratings and decide which spot was your favorite place to read.
● Learn about the planets and stars by reading a book, then look for constellations in the summer night sky.
● Read a book that is written like a diary. Create a diary of your own by writing down some memories from your summer in a journal or old notebook.
● Read or reread a book with a character you love. Now, think about what that character might do over the summer. Write down or draw a picture of what you’ve imagined.
● Read a book that takes place in nature, then go to your backyard or a park and study bugs up close, observe trees and flowers, and enjoy the wonders of the world!
