Week 7 Christmas Term 2014

IPC

This week the children have delved into the digestive system and learned about the function of the heart. By the end of next week, children will be able to explain how bones are used for support, protection, movement and growth. They will also be able to name many of the bones in the body and know how muscles work. We will also look into the human life cycle and know what changes happen to our bodies over time.

Language Arts

Reading

The Café Strategy we examined this week was ‘Making Mental Images’. Good readers make vivid mental images or pictures in their mind while they aread, like a mind-movie. We will be exploring more about ‘Making Mental Images’ while reading next week.

Writing

In Writing Workshop, we continued to explore Personal Narratives; both in writing more and in reading more. We looked at the Personal Narratives through the lens of Friendly Letters with several of our Mentor Texts in which the main characters were writing letters to each other. Next week will explore Personal Narratives through the lens of a diary.

Our Handwriting focused on the joined-up letters of ‘ill’.

Spelling

We have been learning the spelling sound ar. Next Week our spelling sound will be ou and ow words.

The Grammar focus was nouns - we looked at common nouns.

Maths

In Maths this week, we began our new chapter on Subtraction within 1000 and started by practising our mental subtraction of simple numbers.

We also recapped on the use of the written method and used the knowledge we already had from Grade 1 to help us subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers, using the written method. By the end of the week, we started subtracting numbers with renaming/regrouping the ones and tens and will continue to work on this next week.

Home Learning

Maths: Please complete the Maths Homework Booklet on simple subtraction within 1000 (no renaming/regrouping). This is a consolidation of last week’s Maths.
