EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of October 16, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
Welcome back to another week here at FSA! We have some exciting things coming up in the next couple of weeks to finish out the month of October. But I also want to take a look back at last week!
On Saturday we hosted the Destination Imagination Skills Workshop for the state. It was a very productive and fun day! There were many workshops and hands-on activities that got this year's teams started! You can see pictures of this event below.
I also want to thank our upcoming high school families for coming to the High School Information Meeting last Thursday. It was a fantastic opportunity to provide our upcoming families with critical and helpful information for the coming years, and it was a very encouraging look ahead at the future of our school!
We had a fun and educational end to our week last Friday morning. Our Pre-k class celebrated their Cultural Unit by bringing in traditional foods and wearing traditional clothing. You can see pictures of this below as well.
In the coming days and weeks we have a couple of fun things for our Elementary Students. On October 19th we have the Art Barn Field Trip for our Pre-K and Kindergarten classes from 9 am - 1:00 pm, and on October 27th we have a 1st and 2nd Grade field trip to Uncle Shucks from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm! I look forward to seeing and hearing all about these exciting trips!
There is also an exciting event happening this weekend! Maker Faire Atlanta will be going on October 21st - 22nd! For some exciting information for our students about this event, please read more below.
Here are just a few other reminders:
PICTURE RETAKE DAY, TUESDAY OCTOBER 17th
Picture Retake Day is Tuesday, October 17th. The New Picture Day ID is AG757003Q1. You may use this day if you either weren't here, or were not completely satisfied with the original pictures. If this is your first time taking the pictures, please wear your RED UNIFORM SHIRT. If you are retaking your picture, please be sure to return your original package. You can still order at MYLIFETOUCH.COM
We would like to encourage all of our families to apply for the State Tax Credit Scholarship program as it greatly benefits our students.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
For more detailed information, please use this link:
COMMUNITY SERVICE
As you are aware, we encourage our students to volunteer in and around their communities. We have already had many students participate in volunteering events in the area such as the Rivers Alive Clean-up Program. As students continue to participate in these kinds of volunteering events or on their own in their communities, please remember to log your hours. Mrs. Cantrell will be logging service hours for Middle School students and Mrs. Selvakumar will do the same for High School students. Please turn in any log sheets or artifacts to them. The requirement is 10 hours per semester. You can pick up a Volunteer Hours Sheet at the front desk and use it to log your hours each semester.
Red Ribbon Week - October, 23rd - 27th
Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign. Please refer to the calendar below for the different activities going on on different days during Red Ribbon Week.

2018 Red Ribbon Theme Contest
Would your student like to win a $10 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble? If so, then they should enter the FSA version of the “2018 Red Ribbon Theme Contest!”
This year’s theme is “Your Future is Key, So Stay Drug Free!” However, the Red Ribbon Campaign is already looking for a catchy theme for next year. Here’s what you can do to enter our contest at school and get a chance to have your artwork sent to the Red Ribbon Campaign for entry in their nationwide contest!
1. Obtain a piece or two of white 8.5 x 11 white cardstock from Mrs. Sanders, the Front Desk, or just use some you have at home!
2. Come up with a catchy new theme for 2018. Check out this link to see helpful hints from past themes: http://redribbon.org/enter/index.html
3. Make sure you include a red ribbon in the design that is a double looped bow. Please refer to the Red Ribbon logo on www.redribbon.org/downloads
4. Turn in your artwork to Mrs. Sanders or the Front Desk by the morning of Monday, October 23rd if you want to be a part of the contest! MSO volunteers will hang all the artwork on Monday and the Middle School Art Club students will judge the entered pieces in 5 grade level categories:
· Pre-K/ Kindergarten
· 1st/ 2nd Grade
· 3rd/4th Grade
· 5th/6th Grade
· 7th/8th Grade
5. The winners will be announced on Friday, October 27th and the winner from each grade level category will be called to the front desk for their gift certificate and a photo! The winners will also have their artwork submitted to the national contest.

A Message from the Clinic
Here are some additional things you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and other illnesses:
- Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils, or other personal items such as towels, combs, and brushes.
- Properly dispose of used tissues when coughing and sneezing, and use your elbow, arm, or sleeve instead of sneezing into your hand.
- Wash athletic practice clothing each day and shower after any contact sports.
- Stay home if you are sick, especially during the first days of the illness when the symptoms are the most severe and the infection is most contagious.
- Return to work or school only when symptoms are improving and when you've had no fever for at least 24 hours
- Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu.
Let's go to costa rica
Students must be 6th grade and up. If you are interested in knowing more about this program, please speak to Mrs. Carmona.
STEAM Team "Recyclables Turned to Art" Needs your Help!
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
As you know we are doing a course called STEAM for grades 6-11. Students have already submitted topics, team members, and they have received their steam teachers. Our 7th grade steam group: Aileen H. Sydney X. Ranjani V. Nina T. and Derek Z. need certain materials that are not easily accessible. We need donations of items like old toys, broken toys, used school materials, magazines, old books, small broken pieces of anything, small knick-knacks and trinkets that you do not want or need around your house. We also really need bottle caps. There are boxes in the Cafeteria and by the Front Desk where students can drop off their donations. They are at the entrance right where they walk in first thing in the morning before they are released to their lockers and right by the trophy cabinet in the Lobby. There are multiple boxes, each labeled by category. All students need to do is bring in their donation(s), drop it off in one of the bins and one of the students from our team will come by at the end of each week and collect the materials. Note that they don’t have to be a specific color, shape, or size. Anything that you would easily throw away you can donate. Thank you for your participation!
Vocabulary Bowl
The 2017-18 Vocabulary Bowl is starting soon. How will Fulton Science Academy rank in Georgia and in the nation? It’s up to your students.
What is the Vocabulary Bowl? It's a competition where students learn vocabulary and work together to propel their school to victory. Last year, over 38,800 schools participated and collectively mastered over 26.8 million words!
