Principals' Post
Hello Panther Families,
We are so excited to be hosting our PANTHER PARADE on TUESDAY, APRIL 21ST at 1:00 PM!
An NPD117 school bus will lead our Panther Professors on a parade around the Glen Oaks community to say hello to all of the students and families we miss so dearly. We encourage you to decorate the windows of your home with PANTHER PAWS AND HEARTS to help spread the Panther love! Of course, we would love to see any handmade signs posted in your windows or along our parade route as well!
Starting at 1:00 PM, we will begin our parade at Glen Oaks School and will be following the route maps posted below. If the parade is not scheduled to progress past your home, we encourage you to line the neighboring sidewalks with signs and waves - we miss you and would LOVE to see you!
This is a parade that is being put on by our staff - we ARE NOT asking families to JOIN our parade of vehicles. Please enjoy our parade by standing outside and waving as we pass by.
We ask that you PLEASE be mindful of social distancing and other health guidelines when enjoying our parade. DO NOT congregate in groups on the sidewalk, in neighbors' lawns, or in parking lots! We do not want to put ANY of our Panthers in danger!
A special thank you to
- Mrs. Brotsch, Mrs. McCormick, Mrs. Valentine - the brains behind this special operation
- Mrs. Marr - for organizing the bus and parade route
This Week's Panther Pulse
Your child can join our Panther Pulse Flipgrid by going to the website https://flipgrid.com/pantherpulse and choosing to log in with Google. This will link them to their school account to access the site.
- THIS WEEK: We would love for everyone to share videos of their family enjoying the Panther Parade! We can't wait to see everyone on Tuesday, April 21st at 1:00 PM. As a reminder, we hope to see your windows and signs covered in hearts and paws - let's show our community how proud we are to be Glen Oaks Panthers!
To contribute to our Flipgrid, your child will need to tap the green plus below to open the Flipgrid camera and record a short video to respond to the question of the week.
Once submitted, the video is held for approval. Once approved, the ENTIRE SCHOOL will be able to see the post - including all of our teachers!
Each week, we will be updating the Panther Pulse with a new question for students to consider and create a response. We are excited to see all of our Panthers - even if it is only in a short video each week!
Announcing… One Book, TWO Schools 2020 3rd-5th Grade Virtual Book Club
Dear 3rd-5th Grade Parents,
We are excited to announce the opportunity for your child to participate in our One Book, Two Schools virtual book club program! Participation in this book club is optional, but we would love to have your child join us! The book that we have chosen for this three week program is a nominee on the Bluestem 2021 list - The Ambrose Deception by Emily Ecton.
- “Melissa is a nobody. Wilf is a slacker. Bondi is a show-off. At least that's what their middle school teachers think. To everyone's surprise, they are the three students chosen to compete for a ten thousand-dollar scholarship, solving clues that lead them to various locations around Chicago. At first the three contestants work independently, but it doesn't take long before each begins to wonder whether the competition is a sham. It's only by secretly joining forces and using their unique talents that the trio is able to uncover the truth behind the Ambrose Deception--a truth that involves a lot more than just a scholarship” (amazon.com)
An interactive reading experience with recorded book chapters, read by Glen Oaks and Oak Ridge Teachers, will be posted on our NPD117 Reads site starting April 17, 2020,for the students to listen to. Therefore, it is not necessary to purchase the book. However, if you would like to purchase the text, it is available at Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble or check your local public library for a digital loan.

Stay Tuned for More Book Club Opportunities
Within the coming weeks, an additional opportunity will become available for our 2nd and 3rd grade readers to participate in a virtual book club! Stay tuned for more information on that!
NPD117 Reads
Hello Glen Oaks Panthers!
We love stories AND we LOVE to share them with you! Since we can't read stories to you at school right now, grab your computer and head on over to our brand new NPD117 Reads site where you can find lots of stories read to you by our teachers and administrators!
We have a variety of picture books and chapter books for you to enjoy! Choose from our picture book or chapter book selections. Stories are being added all the time so check back often. Some chapter books are available as one file with all the chapters together and also as individual chapters so you can enjoy some family reading together daily. If you have a book you'd love to hear, please fill out this form and we'll see what we can do!
You will need to login with your school Google account to listen to these stories.
We hope you enjoy these books as much as we do! Happy Reading from your Glen Oaks family!
Cancellation of Lion King Kids Musical
Dear Lion King Kids Families,
Due to the school closure, this year’s musical will unfortunately no longer be possible. Consequently, we will be cancelling “Lion King Kids.” We delayed this decision as long as we possibly could hoping that we could still somehow move forward with our shows. However, knowing the amount of work that goes into a production, we would not feasibly have enough time.
We are all extremely disappointed. Even though our students only had three rehearsals, they accomplished a great deal. They found the courage to audition, came to rehearsals on time to sing and dance, learned lyrics in another language, and learned the choreography for the Circle of Life. For some of our students, this was the first time they danced or sang by themselves in front of other people. We could not be more proud of what our students accomplished in such a short time. We know there will be other plays and musicals in the future, and this experience will only make our students better for their next rehearsal and performance.
We are all very proud of our students and look forward to seeing them in future productions.
Sincerely,
Mrs. McMillin
Ms. Fitzgerald
Mr. Hoch
Mrs. Kelly-Albright
Mrs. Pequette
Mrs. Farmer
Mr. Gesiakowski
Mrs. McCormick
Family Support Resources
As many businesses and community supports have been forced to close during the Covid-19 pandemic, the NPD 117 Social Workers have compiled a list of resources which are confirmed to still be operational. This is not a complete list, simply a few resources that remain open during this crisis. Should you need further support please reach out to your building social worker or school Principal directly and we will do our best to assist you. As always, if you or someone you know is in immediate danger please call 911. We wish you and your families health and wellness during this difficult time.

Remote Learning Reminders
Please continue to check www.npd117.net for updates - this central location provides the most up-to-date information regarding our remote learning plans and the continued school building closures. Remember - our school buildings may be closed, but learning continues from home!
REMOTE LEARNING
As announced previously, school locations will remain closed through April 30th. However, our students continue to participate in learning activities at home through the District's remote learning plans. Please continue to access this site each week to keep your child engaged in learning from home.
As a reminder, there will be no Remote Learning Days on Friday, April 10 and Monday, April 13 as these dates were scheduled days off on the school calendar.
TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT QUESTIONS
If you have questions related to logins or accessing websites/accounts, please ask your child's teacher. If they are unable to support you, they will direct your question to the correct person to promptly assist you.
If you have a District-issued Chromebook that is in need of repair, you can swap your student device with a loaner on Wednesdays and Fridays at the main entrance of Conrady Jr. High between 10am - 12pm. This applies to all students throughout the district. We are using Conrady Jr. High as the central location for exchange.
We will be conducting the exchange as an opportunity to safely trade a device that needs repair in order to receive a working loaner. We ask that if you are turning in a Chromebook for repair to bring the power cord along with it.
MEAL DISTRIBUTION
Meals will continue to be distributed to students from 10 a.m. until noon on Mondays and Wednesdays at Conrady Junior High School.
When picking up meals at Conrady, enter through the north entrance on Roberts Road and follow the traffic cones to proceed to door 8 to receive meals. Remain in your vehicle, provide us the number of children, and meals will be brought to you. Children do NOT need to be in the vehicle to receive meals.
Please call 708-233-4514 to speak with Food Services with questions or concerns including the inability to pick up meals at these times and we will attempt to make other arrangements.
DON'T WAIT! There is still time to order your yearbook and have it delivered to your home!
