SAT PREP FOR JUNIORS

To help prepare junior students for the SAT in April, we are offering them the opportunity to work on Khan Academy during the school day. Khan Academy has outstanding SAT preparation tutorials that use students' strengths and areas for improvement, based on the PSAT they took in the fall, to prescribe an individualized practice plan for each student. In a survey of nearly 250,000 test-takers, students who utilized Khan Academy for 20 hours had an average score gain of 115 (Composite, English + Math) points between the PSAT and SAT.

This practice will take place during flex time twice a week and will be supervised by one of our staff members. Students will be scheduled into the course and must meet attendance expectations. For completing the program, students will receive a mark of MTC and 0.25 credit as an Independent Study on their transcript. This will count towards the credits necessary for graduation.

All juniors are eligible to participate. To register, complete this form and the course will be added to your student's schedule.

EXTENDED STUDY OPTION FOR BLOCKS C & D

Students who have not met competency in a course have been assigned to work with the teacher of that course during flex time. Attendance will be taken and parents will be notified if students are failing to take advantage of this academic intervention. In addition, the extended study option for students will begin during Block C (2:30-3:45 pm on all school days but Wed.) or Block D (4:15-6:45 pm, Tues. & Thurs.) this week. Our goal is for every student to demonstrate competency in every course, regardless of the time needed to meet that goal, and we want to encourage students who are interested in demonstrating advanced competency to pursue that option as well.

If you would like to register your student for extended study this quarter, please complete this form. District transportation will be provided for students who need it, but it may take a few days to get students added to routes, so if your student will need a bus after Block C extended study, please wait until being notified by me that transportation has been arranged before having your student stay.

SPEAKER SERIES

If your student is interested in mechanical engineering or a law-related career, encourage them to sign up during advisory Tuesday for one of this week's sessions in our Speaker Series, offering Compass Academy students the opportunity to engage in conversations with people from a variety of careers.

  • Wednesday (1/12), 9:30-10:15 am: Mechanical Engineer, David Hicke
  • Wednesday (1/12), 2:15-3:00 pm: Lawyer, Karen Lindflott

We are always looking for careers to highlight, so if you or someone you know may be interested in participating in our Speaker Series, please contact Sharon Stanley (sharon.stanley@d303.org).

JOB SHADOWING FOR SECOND SEMESTER- REGISTER NOW!

The city of St. Charles is offering a job shadowing program that will provide opportunities for Compass Academy students on Wednesdays this semester! In the new career pathway job shadow program, which is open to St. Charles high school students interested in exploring a career in municipal government, students can shadow people in all many career fields, including engineering, communications, accounting, firefighting, law enforcement, construction, and vehicle maintenance.

Students may schedule up to three different job shadow experiences per school year, during which they can explore work sites, ask questions, see demonstrations, and learn about education and certifications. Students will be responsible for transportation to and from the City. The date, time, and length of the job shadow will be scheduled outside of school hours directly with the City’s job shadow program coordinator. Compass students should schedule their shadowing on Wednesdays whenever possible.

Interested students should complete the Registration Form and return it to Mrs. Stanley or Ms. Ohlson at Compass Academy.

COURSE REQUEST PROCESS FOR COMPASS ACADEMY, 2022-23

Many Compass students have asked about course requests and how they should approach this process for next school year. Students who are interested in taking elective courses at East or North High School should indicate that interest in HAC. Next week, there will be additional Compass Academy course options for students to request in HAC as well.

Students were surveyed recently about courses they would like us to add at Compass, so in keeping with our model- giving students voice and choice- we are working to develop related course proposals now in alignment with Illinois State Board of Education course codes and guidelines. Once all courses we will be offering next year are visible in HAC, students and parents will be informed.

High school students' course selections are not finalized until they meet with their counselor, which will occur during the week of 1/31-2/4 for Compass Academy students when they meet with Ms. Ohlson. Schedules are built after that process is completed for all high school students. This means that all students who complete their course requests before meeting with their counselor will have the opportunity to be placed in their requested courses at East or North and Compass Academy.

DO YOU KNOW STUDENTS WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING COMPASS ACADEMY NEXT YEAR? INVITE THEM TO OUR OPEN HOUSE ON 1/25.
