WELCOME TO EARLY LEARNERS!
September 2, 2022
Dear Early Learners Families,
It was wonderful to see so many parents during our Curriculum Night earlier this week. We appreciate you taking the time to join us on Tuesday.
Thank you for your partnership as we move into September. Below are a few important updates:
Arrival & Dismissal for Students in Mrs. Kibort's/Ms. Vitorla's class: Beginning on Tuesday, September 6th, drop-off and pick-up will both occur in the east parking lot off of Birchwood. Please pull through the lot to the area where the diagonal lines are painted and wait for your child's teacher. We use the right lane for both pick-up and drop off while the left lane is used as a passing lane. Please help us keep traffic flowing by keeping the left lane clear at all times. Please share our updated procedures with any adult who may be involved in transporting your child to or from school so that they are familiar with our process as well!
SHIELD Testing: If your child is participating in SHIELD testing, samples need to be dropped off in the front office vestibule by 9 am on Mondays (Tuesdays if there is no school on Monday). This weekly collection timeline applies to students participating in our morning and afternoon programs.
We hope your family enjoys the three-day weekend!
Sincerely,
Marcia Klita
A Message From Nurse Nora Moskos
We would like to remind you that families are still required to report any potential COVID symptoms to their building nurse and await guidance prior to sending your child to school. If your child is presenting with COVID symptoms, we will be continuing to accept home test results via our website.
Here is the link to submit your child’s home test results (please select your child’s school from the drop down menu). If you have any questions or concerns about your ability to access home tests during the school year please reach out to Joanna Ford at jford@dps109.org.
Below is the list of COVID symptoms:
- fever
- moderate to severe persistent headache
- shortness of breath
- cough
- sore throat
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- loss of taste
- loss of smell
Even if your child is negative for COVID they need to be diarrhea, fever, and vomit-free for 24 hours without medication prior to their return to school.
Feel free to contact Nurse Nora Moskos if you have any questions at nmoskos@dps109.org.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN EARLY LEARNERS?
This week was so much fun as we wrapped up our back to school unit. The four year old classes spent the week focusing on names and their stories. The students loved getting to share the stories behind each of their names as well as reading books such as Your Name is a Song and Alma. The three year old classes spent the week doing all things Pete the Cat, reading a variety of Pete’s books and creating art projects connecting to the stories.
The classes continued to learn and practice all of the expectations and routines that go with being at school and it’s been wonderful to see all of the students getting more comfortable with these things.
Next week we are excited to begin our construction unit which will continue through the next two weeks!
Have a wonderful long weekend!
Speech with Ms. Nathanson
This week in speech group I introduced the Expanding Expressions Tool (EET). The Expanding Expressions Tool helps students describe and define objects. Each bead represents something different. This week, we focused on "green group". The students helped sort items into different categories (i.e., animals, food, clothing). Please see below for a picture of the EET as well as the meaning of each color bead.
