Duke University Talent Identification Program
What is the Duke Talent Identification Program Search?
The largest program of its kind, participants in the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search identify academic strengths, develop abilities and interests, and celebrate their achievements at a crucial time when they are forming their identities and looking ahead to the future. TIP assists families in determining how advanced their students’ academic abilities are and what level of educational challenge is appropriate.
As part of the talent search enrollment, Duke TIP registers eligible seventh graders to take either the ACT (no Writing) or SAT (no Essay) as an above-level test. This allows students to have greater insight into their abilities and it gives them the opportunity to preview a college entrance exam.
Parents are invited to take a moment to learn about this talent search, its valuable benefits and resources designed specifically for academically talented youth, and its qualifications for enrollment.
Do I Qualify?
- You must be in the seventh grade (or a current eighth grader who skipped seventh grade).
- You must meet the test score requirements below.
Eligibility Requirements:
Students can be eligible for applying to Duke TIP if they meet any one of these criteria:
Georgia Milestones - Grade 5 ELA score of > 595
Georgia Milestones - Grade 5 Math score of > 604

Media Notes
Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for all our students in grades 6-8. The objectives of the program are to encourage the pleasure of reading, broaden reading interests, practice cooperative learning, increase reading comprehension, and provide opportunities for students to speak in a public forum.
Students read books from a list of ten books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read in a trivia style competition. Competing teams of 3-4 students are alternately asked questions about reading selections from the list of books. Points are scored for correctly identifying which book the selection is from. Students will sign up and form teams in their ELA classes or on their grade level team. The books on the list are available in the MMS Media Center but can also be borrowed from the public library or purchased online or at a local bookstore. There will be three rounds of competition held on January 26, February 16, and March 2, 2018.
Prizes will be awarded for the winners at each level of competition. Additionally, many ELA teachers are offering incentives as well for students who participate. Please encourage your student to think about getting involved in this exciting program!
LET THE BATTLE BEGIN!

Amy Brandon, PTSO President
Welcome to Madras! The purpose of our PTSO is to help improve our school by combining the efforts of parents, students, and teachers. We invite you to join PTSO to help make our school a better place to work and learn! Our fundraising efforts have benefited a variety of projects in the past including school building improvements, teacher instructional requests, equipment for the fine arts department, instructional technology purchases, and athletic programs. This year, our goal is to raise enough funds to purchase an electronic sign in front of the school to replace the old signage. We hope to reach this goal by the end of the school year. We ask that each family join PTSO with a $12.00 contribution. (Checks should be made payable to Madras PTSO.)
We also need your volunteer time! If you are interested in assisting with any of the areas below, please print the form below linked beneath, and indicate in the appropriate section. Return the form to the MMS front office or to your child's homeroom teacher. You will be contacted as the events take place.
There are many opportunities to serve through PTSO:
- Snack n Chat (Monthly)
- School Store (rotational schedule
- Teacher Luncheons

- Black History Month Program Reception
- Decoration for Receptions/Luncheons

Box Tops Update
By Gina Johnson, PTSO Box Top Coordinator
September BoxTops Update
The students and faculty did a great job clipping and turning in BoxTops for the month of September! So far, $609 worth of BoxTops has been clipped and will go towards the Madras school fund!
Keep those BoxTops coming in! The month of October homerooms will continue to collect BoxTops. The homeroom with the most turned in by the end of school on Friday, October 27th will be the winner of a Chick-Fil-A breakfast.
Reminder:
Only BoxTops that have not expired will count.
BoxTops can simply be placed in a baggie, but the baggie should be labeled with the student’s name and homeroom to get credit.
Thank you for thinking of Madras by remembering to clip those BoxTops! Download the BoxTops app or visit the BoxTops website http://www.boxtops4education.com/ for contests and more ways to earn for our school!
