Thought for the Week.
Encouraging and engaging debate, discussion and discourse.
Nelson Mandela 1918 - 2013
This week we encourage our students to contemplate just what it was that made Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela so special as well as offering respect to a truly good man on his passing.
The Young Activist.
Mandela became interested in politics during his early 20s and has been expelled from university for organising a strike to protest against poor food!
The Political Prisoner.
Mandela spent much of his adulthood protesting against the apartheid government of South Africa in a variety of ways; many of which were illegal and resulted in his arrest on more than one occasion. In 1964 he was sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage. It was here that his legendary status began to form.
His Robben Island Prison Cell.
Mandela spent 18 of his 27 imprisoned years on Robben Island. During this time he developed a profound sense of the need for reconciliation and peace if his nation were to move forward. He tirelessly encouraged others to follow this ideal.
The First Black President of South Africa.
Four years after his release from prison in 1990 Mandela was elected as President of South Africa. He continued to preach a message of forgiveness, love, equality and union amongst South Africans and the wider world. Mandela retired from public life in 2004 but has remained a inspirational man to millions of people around the globe.
