Husky Happenings
September 9-13
From Mr. Martin
I would like to spend some time talking about assessment. We are currently in the process of completing MAP testing in ELA, Reading, and Math. This is a great tool to monitor the progress of learning throughout the year. This same assessment is administered in Dec and May. (3 times per year) Remember when looking at MAP data, you are monitoring growth. Also, your students should be able to tell you a number for a goal that they have set. Ex. I got 207 in the Fall and my goal is 211 in December.
We also have an assessment just targeting reading skills. You will hear the word Acadiance, formerly DiBels, that is administered in grades 5-8. This year we have expanded this reading assessment to grades 7-8.
I focus on assessment because we are using this data to group students (tiered instruction) and reassess to see if the skill has been achieved. We are targeting specific instructional skills, using data, and then assessing to see if those skills have been achieved. Research to support this practice. RTI (Response to Intervention)

Zero Reasons Why
Last year the six public school districts in Johnson County, including Gardner Edgerton, joined forces to send a positive message to teens regarding mental health needs. The name of the campaign is Zero Reasons Why. The three main pillars of the campaign are: 1. Reduce the stigma of talking about mental health. 2. Increase education on mental health issues and 3. Increase community involvement along with schools to offer support and education. In order to promote the message, during the week of September 16th every student in grades 5-8 will receive a t-shirt with the campaign logo. We invite all students grades 5-12 to wear the shirts to the Blazer home football game on Friday September 20th to support the Zero Reasons Why theme. In addition, shirts will soon be available for purchase by community members and parents. More information on how to order shirts will soon follow. There are Zero Reasons Why that we should not support our student’s well being and overall health! #zeroreasonswhy
TRMS Alex’s Lemonade Stand Fundraiser
We are starting a fundraiser on September 9th that will run through the month of September in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The funds we raise will help support Childhood Cancer Research and the families that are affected. We will be raising money by selling lemonade at our sporting events(football & volleyball), selling paper lemons during school lunches, & through your donations. Students should be bringing home a flyer with more details. Our goal this year is to raise $1,500 by the end of September! Any amount is appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to read about this.

Mr. Smith and Mrs. Najera sponsor FCS every Wednesday @ 7:30am in Mr. Smith’s room - A101 in the 8th grade hallway. FCS gives students an opportunity to connect with students who have similar interests and beliefs and model how to connect with and serve our community here at TRMS. This is open for grades 5-8. We would love to see you there!
REPORTING A STUDENT ABSENCE
If your student needs to miss school for any reason, please notify the office. Parents are able to report the absence via Skyward (Family Access). Click on the "Attendance" option on the Menu. Once in the Attendance section, click on "Absence Request." Please make sure to include the reason for your student's absence. This feature will submit an email to the attendance secretary.
This can ONLY be accessed via the PARENT Skyward account. Students do not have access to this feature.
If you need to pick up your student early for an appointment, etc., please call the office when you are on your way and we will call your student to meet you in the office. You must come into the office to sign them out. It is not necessary to sign them back in, as they can do that on their own.
Parents of 7th Grade Students: Please remember to send documentation of your student’s Tdap and Meningococcal immunizations to our office. These immunizations are mandatory for all 7th grade students to attend school in the state of Kansas.
Students will not be allowed to attend school on October 22, or until proof of immunization is received. Exclusion letters will be mailed out the last week in August. Please contact me if my records do not match yours.
