Principal's Message
Homecoming Parade…The kids truly had an amazing time celebrating “Spirit Week”! Our students and staff really enjoyed wearing their favorite teams shirts and hats, while culminating today with our black and orange day…too much fun! Lastly, Brighton’s Homecoming Parade (I heard) will still occur this evening, rain or shine. Hope to see you and your families around 6:00 this evening on the Parade route!
Conferences…It’s getting to be that time of the year. Our teachers are using a flexible schedule to have conferences with all parents. The goal for us is to meet with every parent and report progress in all areas of the curriculum, along with student behavior. Teachers will facilitate the meeting in a way that you’ll understand exactly how your child is progressing or will explain ways to support them in areas that may need improvement. The format can be either virtual or in person.
As an administrator, I send this communication (Stinging News) to update you on ways to support your child in different ways. There is also an expectation of our teaching staff to inform you on weekly procedures and ways to help your child. All teachers at Hornung Elementary send home or email a weekly newsletter that informs you of pertinent topics, schedules, and events that are occurring. Also, hopefully through your conference or by way of previous contacts (Curriculum Nights), we are all on the same page regarding classroom practices. In addition, children in elementary school are usually involved with daily reading and writers workshops. Other subjects taught are math, science, social studies, and health. Please go into the conference with the thoughts of listening first and then having that dialogue that’s productive. The following article gives you even more focus and purpose to your conference
“Ask four questions at your Parent-Teacher Conference”
A wise person once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” Your Parent-Teacher Conference can show you where the teacher wants to take you this year – and how he/she plans to get there. As you prepare for your conference, here are four questions you should ask your child’s teacher:
What skills will my child be expected to master this year?
If you know that they are expected to know multiplication tables by the end of the year, you’ll be prepared to help them. If fourth graders do a big project on ancient Egypt, you’ll be prepared.
How will you evaluate my child’s progress? Schools use testing in different ways. Kids who don’t do well on some assessments (DIBELS) could qualify for academic support (RtI program). Other tests could decide who gets into certain programs.
What can I do to help?
As a parent, you have a critical role to play in helping your child. Ask the teacher how much time your child should expect to spend on homework. Ask if there are other ways you can support learning at home.
What is the best way for us to communicate with each other?
You’re still the best expert on your child. You’ll know the day they are sad because their goldfish died or the day they struggled to do their math homework. The more that you can share those things with the teacher, the better your child’s year will be.

Counselor Corner
Hello from your Elementary Counselor, Mrs. McKiddy! I have very much enjoyed our start to a great school year. I spent the month of September visiting classrooms for a social-emotional lesson centered around forming connections with peers and strengthening friendships. I have also increased visits with individual students needing social-emotional support. I am working hard to add some peer support groups by the end of the month! As the year progresses, I am continuing to connect with classroom teachers for referrals for students who are struggling or may need additional support. If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school. We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home! Please feel free to contact your counselor with any questions or concerns that you may have, and Mrs. Fox or Mrs. McKiddy will do their best to support your child. The McKinney Vento Act
The Brighton Area Schools is part of a consortium to serve students in temporary living situations that provides financial support for educational needs, referral for housing, clothing and other needs, general support and technical assistance. To ensure compliance with federal law, all school staff must help identify student living in the following situations: emergency shelters/transitional housing, motels/hotels, car, parks or public spaces, shared housing due to a loss of housing or economic hardship, or living temporarily with non-parent or guardian.
The district’s homeless liaison is Starr Acromite and each building has trained staff members to assist in the endeavor. Our consortium contact at the Livingston Educational Service Agency is Candice Uyttendaele.
Please contact your building principal or Starr Acromite at 810-299-4040 for information/assistance.
