SWS Update: Oct / Nov
We hope everyone has a safe and Happy Halloween!
First and foremost, a big THANK YOU goes out to all of you!
Thanks so much for your support of our spirit week and the fun walk! The FUN WALK is one of our most important fundraisers! That money goes directly to our school--assemblies and field trips, just to name a couple. We met our goal and collected over $9,800!!
The BOOK FAIR was a HUGE success! The kids had fun shopping and the teachers really appreciated their specially purchased books for the classroom. Also, SWS families purchased over $13,000 worth of books, which enabled us to purchase over 300 new books to add to our library! Scroll down to see all the books we were able to purchase!
Events, like the Fun Walk and the Book Fair, aren't possible without tons of volunteers--special thanks to everyone who helped out!
Also, thank you to all who contributed change to the A.I. DuPont Kindness Matters coin collection! The $1532.50 in coins allowed us to purchase over 150 books for delivery to children at the hospital over the holidays! That is amazing! We have very generous families in our community! And, since this shows our SWS kindness, this earned three bars on the school PBIS thermometer towards a school-wide celebration!
Finally, thanks to all who attended the CycleBar event! Not only was it an amazing workout for those who attended, but also it raised $505 for Starkweather!!!! What a great fundraiser! A special thanks to Mrs. Kate Saraceni for hosting this event!
Thanks again,
John Meanix, Principal
& The Starkweather PTO

PTO Meeting/Meanix Report Card Presentation On November 6th!
Want to learn about our k-2 report cards? Do you know what Standards are included on the K-2 report card? Or even what it means? Or how you can interpret all the information on there?!??!
As you may know, Pennsylvania adopted the PA Common Core in 2010. The standards indicate what all students in each grade level should know and be able to do by the end of that school year. In the WCASD, our administrators and educators have aligned our curriculum to the PA-CC standards. For initial information, please see this Standards-Based Report Card informational newsletter. Please mark your calendar for our PTO meeting on Wednesday, Nov 6th, at 7pm. At this meeting, I will share a brief presentation about standards and standards-based reporting, as well as answer any questions. I'll also have some teachers in attendance to help with questions as well. We hope to see you there!
Veterans Day Action on Nov 11!
On the morning of Monday the 11th, we will have a brief flag-raising ceremony. Click VeteransDay2019.pdf for details. We are excited to expand our recognition this year and hope some families can join us. If you can attend, click VETERANSDAYRSVP and fill out the form so we have an idea of how many may join us.
Also, all students are invited to complete the following sheet and hand it in to his or her homeroom teacher. These will be displayed throughout the school. Click on My American Hero.
Homeroom teachers may have already shared what is being collected by different grade levels to support the Veterans Hospital--here are the basics:
- K-1 will collect new underwear.
- 2-3 will collect new sports socks and new slipper socks.
- 4-5 will collect new undershirts / camisoles / tank tops
Of course, all of these are optional activities. Just wanted to share how our school is recognizing the day and supporting the community.
