A Message from Dr. Cohen
NEW: Two Things You Need to Know from the Sept. 21 Board of Education Meeting
Dear MCPS Community:
Here are two things you need to know about from the Sept. 21, 2021, Board of Education meeting, including remembrances of Mrs. Patricia O’Neill and a report on the Equity Accountability Framework: Evidence of Learning.
- The Montgomery County Board of Education shared remembrances of Mrs. Patricia O’Neill, board member since 1998 who passed away on Sept 14. Board members and MCPS staff recognized the depth and breadth of institutional knowledge that Mrs. O’Neill brought to her work with the Montgomery County Board of Education in her commitment to the students and staff of MCPS. An official proclamation was presented to the O’Neill family and a video remembrance was shared. It can be viewed here.
- MCPS staff shared ongoing work in support of the MCPS Equity Accountability Model and the Evidence of Learning Framework. MCPS staff shared the 2020‒2021 Evidence of Learning (EOL) end-of-year performance data for students in Grades 2, 5, 8, and 11. These 2020-2021 data represent the first full-year view of academic performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Evidence of Learning Framework employs a multiple measures approach designed to help us answer the questions: Are our children learning and are they learning enough? The staff report included the following:
- A review of Evidence of Learning data from 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 revealing the effect of virtual and hybrid learning in key areas of literacy and mathematics.
- Information concerning the college and career readiness of students from the 2020-2021 school year, including the overall success of students by student demographics.
- The school improvement planning process.
- A focus on literacy and mathematics.
- The use of assessments to inform changes in instructional practices.
- The acceleration of learning that focuses on the mastery of grade-level content.
- Providing tutoring resources and student instructional interventions.
- Providing necessary professional development for staff.
This work represents key strategies and tactics necessary to support students returning to in-person learning in a continuing COVID-19 environment.
More information about these items is available here.

This Week's Notes from the SVHS College & Career Center:
Applying to Colleges & Universities
Just a note/reminder about the process of applying to colleges and universities. Students applying to any four-year schools should be referring to the SVHS College Application Packet document as a resource. If you have not started working on this yet, I advise that you start ASAP.
For students interested in applying to Montgomery College, the process is a bit different. Montgomery College has their own online application. Students can start filling this out and submitting in mid-October. If you are in Dual Enrollment and/or have taken courses at MC and already have an M Number, you will NOT need to submit a new application to Montgomery College. You will just need to reach out to Raptor Central and explain to them that you are interested in registering for classes in the fall.
College Application Fee Update
Bowie State University has eliminated the undergraduate application fee for this school year for all prospective students.
College Representative Visits at SVHS
Students interested in participating in college visits should register in Naviance. The list of college visits is available in Naviance or on the link below. Visit dates can also be seen on the SVHS College & Career Center Calendar.
To attend a college visit, students must clear their absence from class with their teacher ONE WEEK ahead of time. It is the responsibility of each student to make-up any work you may miss.
Unless noted, visits will take place in the College & Career Center, Room #2113.

Students in grades 9 and 11 will be assessed on English Language Arts (ELA 8/10), Math, and Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA).
For the next two weeks, students will participate in the MCAP test administration. This week all grade 9 and 11 students will take the MCAP English Language Arts assessments. Students will go to specific classrooms on Tuesday, September 28th and Thursday, September 30th during their Advisory period to take these assessments. Next week, students will take the MCAP Math on Tuesday, October 5th and the Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA) on Thursday, October 7th. Here is a copy of the schedule and calendar for testing. SVHS TESTING CALENDAR (Click link)
Students should bring Chromebooks and chargers for the testing. We serve breakfast to all students daily and encourage students to eat each day. We also encourage students to get a good night's rest.

NEW: Library Media News: Join a Book Club!
Ms. Little, our Library Media Specialist, sponsors three book clubs at Seneca. The Black-Eyed Susan Book Club is a year-long reading club through which students read three of ten nominated books by April, and then vote to help select the best book for Maryland’s high school readers. Project LIT Community is grassroots, nationwide literacy movement that aims to promote reading by providing access to books that help students feel seen and heard. One Maryland One Book is a statewide reading program that takes place each fall. This year, we are reading The Book of Delights by Ross Gay. To learn more about each of these clubs, students may visit the Book Clubs flag in the Virtual SVLMC or plan to attend an interest meeting in the Library Media Center this Friday, October 1st, at the beginning of lunch.

SVHS is looking for students interested in plant business or science to explore the option of joining the new horticulture club. This club will have the use of the new greenhouse almost exclusively this year.
To get us started, we are looking for donations of good, clean plant pots. Bleached would be best but not necessary.
We know many people might have a few lurking in storage, waiting for a new purpose.
We will also happily take small or medium vases or sad houseplants looking for a new life.
Students may bring materials to room 1322.
For more information about the club, find us at this address and fill out the student interest form.

REPEAT: Action: Complete the Google, YouTube and Online Digital Tools Consent Form
Parents and guardians - if your student is in grade 9, new to MCPS, or if they have not previously submitted this form, please use this link to give your student(s) permission to access and use technology resources as part of their learning experience:
Please note that the link above includes two forms.
The first page is the G-Suite Additional Services & YouTube Permission Form. MCPS uses Google’s G Suite for Education Core Services to provide students with access to tools and services such as email, online storage, and web-based applications -- all students have access to these Core Services. Student access to and use of additional G Suite services and YouTube, beyond the Core Services, requires parent/guardian permission. Please read this form and indicate consent at the bottom of the page.
The second page is the Supplemental Online Digital Tools (ODT) Consent Form. This form addresses student use of 3rd party apps, such as Kahoot!, Khan Academy, Padlet, and Code.org. All of the online digital tools used by teachers are vetted for safety and privacy requirements, but may still require “affirmative parent consent” for student use. If you are comfortable with your student using these technology resources, please indicate consent at the bottom of the page.
The third page requests student and parent/guardian names.
Failure to provide consent to Additional Services and Supplemental Online Digital Tools will not result in loss of access to the G-Suite Core Services, but will limit access to other technology resources used to facilitate teaching and learning. Consent remains valid for the entire time the student is enrolled in an MCPS high school and may be rescinded at any time.
