All About Aileen

Hello, my name is Aileen Lawton. I am 9 years old and I’m in 4th grade at Cayuga Elementary School. This year I wanted to try something new and exciting. I wanted to start a school newspaper. When I read the article about Orange Street News, I became inspired and wanted to create a newspaper in my own school. And so here we are! Along with my class, we will be launching a class newspaper called 4-4’s Cayuga School News. Wait until you see all the exciting articles my class and I will be working on for our first issue, expected to be released in January 2018, Imagine… a brand new newspaper to kick off the New Year!.

Here are some things I’d like to share about myself:

  • I am the Editor in Chief of 4-4’s Cayuga School News.
  • I like to play video games, especially Roblox
  • I LOVE to play lacrosse!!!! I play on two teams: Team 91 and Sachem.
  • My favorite things to do at school are making new friends and going to Phys. Ed.

I hope you enjoy 4-4’s Cayuga School News as much as I enjoy working on it!

Hard Work and Dedication Pay Off By Thomas Farrish

Hi my name is Thomas. Are you interested in being a better student? I work very hard to do well in school. Let me tell you how I do it.

Some strategies I use for reading are breaking up the word, skip the word, look at the picture, find a word in the word that I know, and sound out the letter in the word. I also reread when I don’t understand something I read. Those strategies can help you become a better reader too.

I also improved in math. Some strategies I use to do well in math are writing notes, checking over my work carefully, listening carefully and following along with my teacher, and asking questions when I’m unsure of something. I raise my hand to participate when my teacher asks a question, and I study to get good grades on my test.

Here are some ways I work hard to improve my writing. I make sure I have capital letters and periods on all of my sentences. I try to use proper punctuation, and when I’m not sure of a word or how to spell it, I ask one of my teachers to help me. I can also use a dictionary to find words I don’t know how to spell.

That is how I became a better student. If you would like to get better grades, follow my advice. Hard work pays off in the end. Trust me!

Super Fantastic Soccer Players We Love By Marisa Ruland and Alex Chmela

Hello, today we are going to be talking about famous soccer players! So we are going to be starting with a female soccer player and her name is Alex Morgan. One fact about Alex Morgan is her birthday is July 2, 1989 and she was born in San Dimas, CA. Her mother’s name is Pamela S. Morgan, and her father’s name is Michael T. Morgan. She is currently 28 years old. The number on the back of her jersey is 13. She won the 2015 World Cup with the women`s soccer team! She scored 28 goals and 21 assists in 2012! That is all for Alex Morgan for now.

Now we are going to be talking about Cristian Ronaldo. Cristian Ronaldo was born on February 5th 1985.His birth place is Santo Antonio, Portugal. He is currently 32 years old. He is known for his foot skills, he’s great at passing the ball, he’s light on his feet, and all that jazz!

Now we are going to be talking about the women's soccer team's former goalie, Hope Solo. The reason why she is not their goalie anymore is because when they were going to play in a country where there was a type of bug called iessa and if the bugs landed on you, you could get sick and the bugs could make types of web. So Hope Solo posted a picture of herself in one of the webs. It made the people in the country where there were bugs feel angry and upset and when they went to their game, all the people in crowd yelled, “Booooo!” when she had the ball. So the 2nd fact about Hope Solo is that her birthday is July 30, 1981.Hope Solo was born in Richland, VA. Hope Solo is also currently 36 years old.

The next famous soccer player we are going to be taking about is Messi! A lot of people think that Messi is one of the best guy soccer players in the world! Anyway the first fact about Messi is that his birthday is January 1, 1968. Messi was born in Argentina. And Messi is currently 47 years old. (He seems so old :p!!!!!!!)

The next person we are going to be talking about is Mia Hamm. Did you know Mia Hamm`s real name is Mariel Hamm? Mia Hamm joined the women`s soccer team at age 15. That is really young! She is currently 38 years old. She was born in Selma, Alabama. She was born on March 17, 1972. The number on the back of her jersey is 9. That is all for Mia Hamm.

The next and final soccer player is a female and her name is Carli Lloyd.

Carli Lloyd learned how to play soccer when she was 5. Is that amazing or what? On the women`s soccer team she plays mid-field. She scored the winning goals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. She is currently 35 years old.

Thank you for listening. Hopefully we will have more facts for you and more skill facts too soon! Have a great day Cayuga!

Trends Now and Then By Jayden Wertovitch and Brooke Piazza

Do you know what a trend is? A trend is something that is popular for a while, but eventually, people get bored of it and move on to something different. There are so many trends now and then. Today we are going to tell you about some trends now and some trends from back in the day, which is like, yesterday.

A popular trend trending today is…SLIME!!! Most people make and have lots and you probably know what we mean. There’s fluffy, jiggly, sticky, glossy, and so on. Our favorite type is fluffy and sticky.

Another trend right now are Squishies! (Jayla Nothdurft is writing a big article about them go check it out!!!) They are slow rising, foamy thingies and come in all different sizes, shapes, and forms. There are small, medium, and jumbo. There are unicorns, cupcakes, lemons, cats, animals, and so on. Squishies are popular for just kind of…you know… just being… SQUISHY!

We are also going to give you good advice. You should get these trendy toys! And if you have a toy that’s not trendy in this article maybe you should think about getting these awesome, fun toys, or the trend monster will get you!!! OK now back to the real stuff.

Then there is another trend, chokers. They come in many colors like blue, purple, pink, rainbow and much much more. Don’t worry, they don’t actually choke you. They are just for fashion. Just go buy them and see what we mean.

One other trend is not just for kids, but for adults too. This trend is an Iphone! Most people have them and love them, so wouldn’t you like one too?

Now for the old trends!!! The fidget spinner. I remember we used those. BUT NOW WE DON’T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were one of the most popular toys of the day turned into yesterday’s news. Like, really people why did you use them??? They were just a spinning piece of plastic, and they were a distraction more than anything else to students AND teachers.

Now another old trend is shopkins. OK I will admit they were cute but still they are old trends and that’s that!!! They were just tiny choking hazards! Just kidding they are pencil toppers! Don’t buy them!

Another old trend is pie face. You crank a wheel and randomly the whipped cream you put on the handle goes in your face. That game was fun, we`ll admit! One last old trend is lala loopsy. They are old creepy dolls. Why do people like them? Anyway that brings us to the end of our article and thanks for reading! BYE! WE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New York Baseball Teams By Nick Fair and Quinn Fiene

New York has two of the very best baseball teams in the country. First let’s talk about the Yankees. The Yankees won 27 World Series. That is the most won World Series in the world of baseball history. The New York Yankees best record is 114 wins and 48 losses. That is a good record. The Yankees are one of the most famous teams in baseball history. The Yankees have and had great players like Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Derek Jeter. But there was one player the king, Babe Ruth!!! He was a great player. He had 60 homeruns in 1927. One time, he even called his shot, pointed to where it would go, and there it went! He had a lot of nicknames like The Sultan of Swat.

Now let’s talk about the Mets. The Mets are a good team. They won two titles in their career. The Mets made it to the World Series in 2015 against The Royals. They lost in game 5, 7 to 2. The Mets lost 4 games and won 1 in that series. They have never been in a World Series since. The Mets have a lot of homeruns in their history. But they had one player with a lot of homeruns. He had 335 homeruns his name is Daryl Strawberry. His number is 18, but his number is now retired. The most homeruns he got in a season was 39. He got it in 1988 and 1987. He was also on the Yankees and the Dodgers.

Squishies By Jayla Nothdurft

Squishies are a new popular toy this year and I’m going to be telling you some things about them. Squishies can come in all different shapes and size. Squishies can be many different things, for example foods, desserts, animals and much much more. There are over 1,000 squishies you can collect. Most kids these days have squishies or want squishies. Even I myself have squishies. I have 10 in total. Squishies can be found in Justice, amazon, or they have a new squishy station in the middle of the mall if this article interests you to buy them. There are 3 different types of squishies- small, medium, and jumbo. My favorite type is jumbo but jumbo aren’t super duper big, but they are like the size of a coffee mug or something. Small and medium is all right too, but I just prefer jumbo. I have small squishies though too. Well this is the end of my article. I hope you enjoyed and learned something new!!!

Teachers Like to Have Fun Too! By Alexa Doyle

Have you ever wondered what teachers do when they’re not in school? Well, you’re about to find out what some of our Cayuga teachers do in their free time.
