Please let me know by Monday, March 26 if you plan on attending any of the field trips this Spring! Thanks!
News from Ms. Hess
Our children worked this week to practice their "soft skills" of empathy, compassion, kindness, and love. Seeing those we love, especially our children, hurt in any way is heartbreaking. Watching your children come together to show empathy, compassion, and love to their classmates in their times of need has strengthened the bonds of our already tightly bound class and made me incredibly proud.
As I told your children, sometimes senseless things happen that we can't explain. It is a constant reminder to us that life is precious and we should care for one another. Thank you for helping your children, sharing your words of encouragement toward our class, and for sending me your children every day.
While this week has had its unusual amount of trials, we have continued learning the following:
In math, we finished our work with adding and subtracting fractions and have moved into multiplying a fraction times a whole number.
In literacy, we have focused on historical fiction and determining theme in books such as Follow the Drinking Gourd and Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt.
In writing, we are continuing our research projects. Students have been collecting information and taking notes. Ask your child about their selected topic. We have everything from "how streets get their names" to "spirit animals"!
In time traveling, we worked in groups to learn about one of the 13 colonies, take notes, and create a persuasive poster. We are applying what we learned about the elements of persuasion to convince our fourth-grade friends to come to our colony when we present them on Monday, March 26!
Growing Up Talk
Dear Parent/Guardian,
We will offer a puberty presentation for 4th and 5th grade girls and boys on Wednesday, April 11th. Mr. Macumber will present to the boys and Nurse Kathy will present to the girls. The students will watch a short video that is gender specific and provides basic knowledge about the puberty experience including the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty. The film will also address the anatomy and physiology of adolescents’ bodies and provide the students with correct terminology for parts of the reproductive system. The female section will address menstruation. After the video, we will allow time for comments and questions. Each student will need written permission to participate in the presentation. Feel free to call one of us if you have questions or concerns or if you’d like more information.
Sincerely,
Kathy Campbell R.N., School Nurse
Ben Macumber, Principal
Penny Drive
