State Testing update

Dear Naval Families

Last spring’s Smarter Balanced and Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) testing were postponed to fall 2021 as the state prioritized critical in-person instruction time for the benefit of students, families, and district staff.

Next month many students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in Math and English Language Arts in 4th and 5th grade.

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction submitted and had approved a testing waiver to postpone these annual assessments until this fall. This waiver also allows us to significantly shorten the assessments to maximize student learning time. Students will only spend a short amount of time on each subject test. More details on the state’s fall testing plan may be found here.

The results from these abbreviated assessments provide a picture of students' academic achievement based on previous learning. For example, 4th-grade students will be given the 3rd grade assessments (that they would normally have taken in the spring). Knowing your student’s achievement level (1 through 4) will provide an important piece of information as the school year progresses. Teachers will use this information to plan lessons and units to build on student strengths.

Your student’s teacher will be able to provide more information about your student’s skills in ELA, math, and science. We will have access to preliminary SBA and WCAS test scores a few days after students complete the online tests.

All Washington students will return to the typical annual assessment schedule by completing the spring administration covering this year’s content in May or June.
