District Hosts Joint Rotary Meeting for West Linn and Wilsonville
Meridian Creek Middle School and the West Linn-Wilsonville School District played host to a special occasion on Wednesday, Jan. 10. The new middle school hosted a joint Rotary Meeting for West Linn and Wilsonville Rotary Clubs, marking the first of many occasions for the two organizations.
Approximately 25 members from each Rotary joined West Linn-Wilsonville School Board Members and staff for the first annual luncheon. The group listened to a presentation from WLWV Superintendent Kathy Ludwig, enjoyed a tour of the new school, and took advantage of the opportunity to get to know their nearby community members.
“Rotary Clubs are truly pillars of the community, and it’s your genuine belief in every person in our community that I’m most thankful for," she said. "We know, because our schools are growing, that people are choosing to move to these two cities for the communities and the schools. We’re proud of that fact and excited to work together into the future.”
Rotarians then engaged in discussion about community collaboration, providing potential ways in which schools and the community can spill into one another. Facilitated by district administrators, Rotarians gained insight on the WLWV school system while helping with important feedback of their own. They suggested potential for internships at local businesses, and vocational training conducted in multitudes of venues among other ideas. READ MORE about the collaborative meeting.
Registration for the 2018-19 School Year Now Open
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board determines whether or not the District will participate in Open Enrollment, which allows for families outside the District to attend WLWV schools. The Board also determines the number of inter-district transfers the District will allow. Those decisions will be made by March.
What Took Place During Last Week's Professional Growth Wednesday?
Early Release Wednesdays might mean getting out of class early for West Linn-Wilsonville students, but for staff it means an opportunity to do some learning of their own. Once a month, class is dismissed two hours early, providing WLWV teachers with time to engage in professional development. Staff did just that on Wednesday afternoon, taking part in a large variety of collaborative learning.
At Lowrie Primary, that work included taking a close look at writing cycle of inquiry work; working on Word Study for Trillium Creek, Stafford, and Willamette; mathematics work at Sunset; and deepened understanding of classroom texts at Cedaroak Park. At the secondary level, Wood started with team-building activities before diving into work around writing; West Linn High School reviewed their initiative to create genuine and personal connections with each and every student; and Wilsonville High School staff continued work with Author Zaretta Hammond's "Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain."

Education Foundation Readies For Blazer Night
The box office is now open for the West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation's 4th annual "Night with the Portland Trail Blazers," as they take on the Detroit Pistons on Saturday, March 17th at 7 p.m. in the Moda Center.
This year, the Foundation is offering online ordering, so that families can select seats and print tickets at the time of purchase. This will make it easier for purchasers while removing the burden of collecting tickets from the desks of our hard-working school secretaries.
As in years past, WLWV ticket holders will have the opportunity to participate in at least one experience. All ticket holders who purchase through the West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation link will have the opportunity to go onto the court after the game and shoot a free throw. Additionally, any tickets purchased for children between the ages of 6 and 13 will be entered into a drawing to participate in the pregame Courtside Kids experience. For this exciting program, 20 kids will get to high-five the Blazers as they come onto the court and sit in their courtside chairs while the team warms up.
To sign up your child(ren) for the drawing simply send an email to marcouxbeyer63@gmail.com. Include:

Oregon Teacher of the Year Looking for Nominations
Each of the 19 Oregon Education Service Districts, including Clackamas Education Service District, will select a winner from their region. Regional winners will be honored across the state in May, and the Oregon Teacher of the Year will be named in September. Regional Teachers of the Year will receive a cash prize of $500 and the Oregon Teacher of the Year will receive a $5,000 cash prize, with a matching $5,000 going toward their schools. The Oregon Teacher of the Year will then serve as spokesperson for Oregon teachers for all of 2019.
Inclement Weather Information
The School District will also notify parents via FlashAlert as well as via ListServ. Parents are encouraged to subscribe to both services if they haven't already. Even if you have previously subscribed to FlashAlert, it is important that you check your subscriptions as the FlashAlert service routinely removes subscriptions that have not been recently updated. Please note that FlashAlert is not a West Linn-Wilsonville system and the district can only provide limited help. Families are encouraged to consider getting the free FlashAlert Messenger app from the Apple AppStore or Google PlayStore.
The School District makes inclement weather decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely, the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability for employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision to open, close, or delay the start of school is made for the entire West Linn-Wilsonville School District. That means that while inclement weather conditions might occur in only certain areas of the district, the decision to close or delay the start of school will be made for all schools. Families will also be notified when the District elects to utilize snow routes due to inclement weather.
