Blessings In A Backpack (reminder)

“Blessings in a Backpack” is a program designed to provide students on the free and reduced lunch program with enough food for three meals a day during the weekends. This program, administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, is active in Royal Oak Schools. If you agree to take part in this program during the school year, your child will receive a bag filled with food for the weekend. A bag of food will be put in your child's locker for take home on Fridays. The simple meals may include food like macaroni and cheese, beef ravioli, canned fruit, granola bars, soups, juice and other items. Students will receive a bag every week.

If you would like to have your child participate in this program, fill out the form below and mail it to the board office at 800 Devillen, Royal Oak, MI 48073, or just hit submit on this form. Please be sure to indicate on the form if you child has any food allergies. If your child has a food allergy, you as the parent are responsible for checking all food labels when the food arrives home. Royal Oak Schools, as well as Blessings in a Backpack, will not be held responsible for any accidental food allergen exposure.

How Adults Take the Joy Out of Sports

This is not directly school related, though I would readily make the argument that the entirety of our students' lives matters to us. And having seen as a parent and educator how well intentioned adults can burn kids out, I recommend reading this.

One Last Informational Tidbit (reminder)

It is clearly an understatement to say that we have had a challenging last few years. A clear offshoot of this is that many of our kids and families are struggling with any number of things, be it social-emotional, financial, or any variety of issues that have been amplified by the pandemic. With this being said, please know that Oakland is a community that looks to support all of its members, both with school resources and our network of outside supports.

If you find your kids or yourselves in any sort of need, please feel free to reach out to me at sam.lynch@royaloakschools.org. Any request for assistance will be discreet, with full intent of following the wishes of each and everyone of you with regards to who might be made aware of your challenges.

In short, we care deeply and want to help.

Last, But Maybe Not Least...

During the first several months of the pandemic, I periodically wrote some thoughts that I thought important for some of us to think about. Many in our community have already read them, but I have had multiple people inquire about seeing some of them again, and we also have several new families joining us. With that in mind, I will keep the links below active (and may periodically add to them). Feel free to take a look or share or ignore, whatever your inclinations may be.
