Remembering Our Veterans

This Friday at CMS we celebrated and remembered those men and women who have given their life for our country. Students wore red, white, and blue and several teachers did writing projects focused on thanking our veterans.

At the same time we nominated our Project 351 candidate and it made me realize how important the idea of service is to developing our students into young men and women. Project 351 was developed by the state of Massachusetts to bring a culture of service to students and schools. Each school in the 351 districts in Massachusetts nominates one grade 8 student to represent their school and community. They spend the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend engaged in service learning activities and then return to our school to prepare a spring service opportunity.

This is only one of many ways we help our students understand the power of service to the community. This month we are also doing a canned food drive to help our the food pantry, and in previous newsletters I have noted other ways we try to share this value with our students.

So as we reach the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of these eleventh month we should stop and remember all those that have served our country and all those currently serving in the armed forces. I have a nephew serving in the air force currently and I will be sending a message filled with love and gratitude along to him this Veteran's Day.

To all our community members who have served our country so well - I thank you. Your service means the world to us.

Are not a good mix. It is fine for a student to have a piece of candy as part of their lunch but please remind them not to bring extra candy (or bags of candy) into school.
