Background Information Down Syndrome

1.The actual name of Down Syndrome is actually Down Syndrome which is also can be known as Trisomy 21.

2.How you can get down syndrome by having extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops, both mentally and physically. It affects about 1 in every 800 babies born in the United States.

3.At the time of conception a baby inherits genetic information from its parents. In most cases of Down Syndrome, a child gets an extra chromosome 21- for a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46 . Its this extra genetic material that causes the physical features and developmental delays associated with DS.

4.Kids with Down syndrome tend to share certain physical features such as a flat profile, an upward slant to the eyes, small tears, and a protruding tongue.

•Low Muscle tone (called hypotonia) usually children with DS typically reach developmental milestones.

•It affects kids' ability to learn in different ways, but most have mild and moderate intellectual impairment.

5.Down Syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. One in every 691 babies in the United States in born with Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome occurs in people of all race and economic levels.

6.It is a problem with the chromosomes, there are no cures for Down Syndrome. Therefore, treatment for the condition focuses on controlling symptoms and any medical conditions that result because of Down Syndrome.

•Regular Checkups and screening

•Medications

•Surgery

•Counseling and Support

7.At the present, there is no way to prevent Down Syndrome. However, scientists continue to learn more about the genetic axis of Down's and hope that in the future it will be possible to improve, correct or prevent many of the problems associated with the condition. Studies suggesting that some women who have had a child with Down's syndrome had an abnormality in the way their body processed folic acid.
