School Counseling
Role of the School Counselor
Did you know that school counselors hold a California credential that allows them to serve students in a K-12 and adult school setting? In SUSD we have school counselors that are here to support in a variety of roles to assist students, staff and families.
As school counselors, we are here to serve, support and provide Multi-tiered, Multi domain systems of support in three primary areas to ensure comprehensive school counseling programs across the district: Social Emotional Learning, College and Career, and Academics. Below are some of the services provided by school counselors in SUSD.
- K-8 School Counselors (Tier 1-3 supports): Provide Classroom Lessons, Groups, Staff Development, Individual Student Support, Responsive Services, SAP Coordinators, College and Career Readiness.
- 9-12 High School Counselors (Tier 1-3 Supports): Provide Classroom Lessons, Groups, Staff Development, Individual Student Planning, Responsive Services, College and Career Readiness.
- School for Adults (Tier 1-3 supports): Career Development, Career Technical Education, High School Diploma, ESL, GED, Financial Aid, and College assistance.
- (SSA) Student Support and Achievement (Tier 2 supports): Work with students who are credit deficient and their families to provide support and resources to help students succeed and graduate from high school.
- (CWA) Child Welfare and Attendance (Tier 2 and 3 supports): Work with students and families who have been chronically absent. Provide support and resources to get students back into school.
- School Counselor Program Specialists: PLUS Program, Tobacco Use Prevention Education, 504 Coordination Services, Restorative Practices Training, Trauma-Informed Practices, Support School Counselors, Parent Workshops, Xello, Spotlight, Race to Complete, District-wide College and Career Readiness.
