Congratulations, Literary Superstars!

What a fantastic literary evening! Congratulations to our JC readers who participated in the GPS district-level "Battle of the Books" competition on Thursday, January 23rd at Central Middle School. In front of a large audience composed of educators, parents, and friends, our brave readers identified titles and then authors based on quotes read to them from a selection of ten books. Riverside Elementary School took this year's trophy. Battle of Books is part of a summer reading program that aims to foster joy in reading. We are so proud of our JC readers - Brent Brower, Gabriel de Carvalho, Hayden Zinker, Ana Leonor Perez Rosario, and Tess Hennigan. JC cannot wait to participate in next year's competition!

From our Nurse - Joann Concepcion

We have started the season for Influenza and are asking parents for their help as the Public Health School Nurse along with the Department of Health participate in the State of Connecticut Influenza Surveillance program. When calling your child out sick, please indicate the presence of flu-like symptoms:

Sudden onset of fever (over 100 F or 37.7 C)

Cough and/ or sore throat

Headaches and/ or body aches

Fatigue

If your child tests positive for Influenza, we follow the guideline that states to keep your child home a minimum of 5 days after diagnosis and to bring in a doctor’s note.

It is part of the medication policy that elementary students are not given cough drops without an MD order. NO lollipop cough drops are permitted. Gargling with salt water is an acceptable alternative.

Thank you for helping to keep all of our students and staff healthy this winter!

JC Students Change the World!

As some of you know, Mrs. Brenda Brush, our assistant principal, has been working with underprivileged children in Bogotá, Colombia for the past 11 years. She is on the Board of Directors of a local non-profit called Love of Orphans Foundation, which helps to support Hogares Luz y Vida, an association that provides care for orphaned, disadvantaged, and disabled children. There are nearly 800 children who are cared for through an orphanage, two schools, several daycare facilities, and a working, self-sustainable farm. Ms. Stewart has also visited Luz y Vida.

The JC Service Club is asking for your help in collecting donations for Mrs. Brush's upcoming trip to Bogotá over the February break. They have set a goal to raise $500. Service Club members will be collecting change at morning drop-off, and in the cafeteria from Monday, January 27th until Thursday, February 6th. A donation jar will also be available in the front hallway. The funds will help purchase things that the children need such as clothing, diapers, toothbrushes, and medical supplies.

For more information, or to find out about other ways to help, email Mrs. Brush at brenda_brush@greenwich.k12.ct.us.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Mrs. Brush, Ms. Stewart, Mr. O'Brien, and the JC Service Club
