School Leaders of the Diocese of Cleveland,
Easter Greetings to you all! After 40 days of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, we rejoice for 50 days, letting the light of the risen Christ shine through us all to everyone we meet.
Our school leadership team is back after a successful week in Chicago, learning from and connecting with leaders from around the nation, near and far. Our team is renewed in energy, flush with ideas and connections, and eager to continue to work with and for you in sustaining high quality Catholic education throughout our diocese. A highlight of the week was watching St. Ambrose principal Lisa Cinadr accept the Dr. Karen M. Ristau Innovations Award, the NCEA’s highest annual award for leadership for innovation. Congratulations, Lisa!
I look forward to seeing elementary leaders this Friday at our luncheon, where we will look back over a wonderful year, look forward to our bright future, and recognize those who are retiring at the end of this school year. If you missed the registration deadline but would still like to attend, read on below.
Finally, many of you and your staff are beneficiaries of the Diocese of Cleveland School Employee Tuition Assistance Fund. I want to make sure you see and share with others this brief write up on the Kaltenbach family, to whom we owe our gratitude for having the vision to fund this needed initiative.
Be assured of our prayers as the month of May gets underway with its many celebrations and preparation for the coming transitions and conclusions.
Sincerely,
Frank

National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10
While the tradition originated outside of the Catholic school sector, we should all be aware of National Teacher Appreciation Week. A National Teachers Day can be traced back to the 1940’s and ‘50s, our current National Teachers’ Week has its roots in advocacy by the NEA in the 1980s. While Chipotle may again offer buy-one-get-one burritos, we as Catholic leaders can thank and appreciate our education professionals for undertaking this sacred vocation. As the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education wrote in 1988, “Teaching has an extraordinary moral depth and is one of [our] most excellent and creative activities, for the teacher does not write on inanimate material, but on the very spirits of human beings” (The Catholic School on the Threshold of the New Millenium).
The Ohio legislature has designated the first Monday in May, May 6 this year, as School Bus Driver Appreciation Day.
Tuesday, May 7, is National Teacher’s Day, "a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives"
The National Association of School Nurses has set aside May 8 as National School Nurse Day
Latecomers for Elementary Principal Luncheon on May 3rd
Disciplinary Literacy - Free Professional Development
Reprinting from last week since we neglected to include the flyer for RSVP.
What is disciplinary literacy? Understanding the literacies of math, science, social studies, and literature
Exciting new research shows that learning to read and write is more than just learning
general strategies—there are subject-specific literacies. Educators from elementary
school through college who understand how different disciplines’ literacies work will be
better prepared to help their students read and write like mathematicians, scientists,
historians, and literary critics. Attendees will earn 2 hours of professional development.
Saturday, May 4, 10am – noon, John Carroll Admin Building Room 303
Breakfast will be provided and attendees are welcome to gather for lunch nearby afterwards.
Presented by Dr. Dan Reynolds, JCU Assistant Professor of Literacy Education
Sponsored by the Notre Dame Club of Cleveland in partnership with the Notre Dame College and Cleveland ACE Advocates. All are welcome.
