Please help us stop the spread of flu at Yarbrough by keeping students home when they are ill.
Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when someone coughs, sneezes or talks.
These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby.
You can also get it by touching something that has flu virus on it and then touching your mouth, eyes, or nose.
People with flu may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to up to 5 to 7 days after.
Your child should stay home to rest and avoid spreading flu to others.
Keep your child home for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
You can take everyday actions to reduce the chance of getting the flu:
Stay away from people who are sick.
Wash your hands often with soap and water.
Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Flu illness can vary from mild to severe.
Always consult your doctor if your child has symptoms of the flu.
Symptoms of the flu:
Onset Sudden, often within hours
Fever Common
Headache Common
Nasal Congestion Common
Dry Cough Common
Chest Pain Common
Muscle Pain Common
Fatigue Common
Duration 3-7 days
Art Action with Mr. Daniel
Happy New Year! We have an exciting time planned for the month of January in the YES Art Dept!
Our fourth grade art students will use their creative ability, proportion, radial balance, symmetry, and space to develop "Radial Balance Designs." We will explore and discuss circumference, diameter, and radius as it pertains to the development of their designs. We will explore the use of contour lines in their composition. We will also explore and discuss the works of famous artist Paul Klee.
Our fifth grade art students will use their imagination, visual texture, space, rhythm, movement, proportion, color schemes, and space to produce "Visual Texture Collages." We will explore how artists use color schemes and texture to convey mood as well as communicate ideas within their composition. We will also explore how famous artist Romare Bearden expressed himself in a creative manner, utilizing a variety of collage techniques.

Music Messages from Mrs. Oprandy
All students were very focused preparing for their music performance celebrating Alabama’s 200th birthday! They worked on singing, movement, following conducting gestures, and having their best singing posture while standing on risers. Fourth graders completed their unit on learning to play the ukulele, and fifth graders completed their unit on learning to play the recorder.
RECORDER INFORMATION FOR 4TH GRADERS
This semester, fourth grade students will be learning to play the recorder. All students will have a recorder assigned to them to play while at school. A letter giving more information about our recorder unit and how you can order a recorder for your child to play at home and/or bring to school will be in your child’s Tuesday folder the first week back. There is also a copy of this letter on my website under “Fourth Grade." Remember that you may only order using myschooolbucks.com, and look for the dropdown box that gives you the opportunity to choose a recorder color. The deadline to order is January 21st.

Welcome to 2020! I hope you have spent time with your children reflecting on the previous year. It is fun to remember the good times and to decide how to change the things we may not have liked so much. Some ideas for goal setting may include: bed times, study time, exercise, eating healthier, having a more positive attitude, and even having a time to relax. This is not only a new year, but a new semester as well. Students need to focus on setting new goals. Help your children set realistic goals for both their academic and personal lives. Setting goals help children raise their self-esteem. Building strong children today invests in our future.
In Guidance we will be focusing on goal setting during the month of January. We will also focus on “hope and optimism”: expecting a better future and working to accomplish it. Take time to ask your children about the goals they have set at school.
Quote of the month:
“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear any hardship today.”
By Thich Nhat Hanh
