Pirate Parent Post Winter Edition

Students Are At The Center Of All That We Do

Dear Families,

Happy New Year!

This is the first chance I have had to send you wishes for a brighter and healthier 2022. We work hard everyday to make sure your students are safe and happy. We will continue to apply our best knowledge to build your child's social, emotional, and academic skills. Together we are keeping our Pirate ship afloat!

This week Spreckels School is participating in the International Great Kindness Challenge. We are so happy to join together with kids all over the world. This year's theme is Kindness Unites. We have been through a lot this past year and now is the time to come together, lift each other up and cheer each other on. We challenge our students and staff to complete as many acts of kindness as they can in one week. Being kind makes everyone feel good and it helps change the world for good! This is a timely reminder to our scholars that they are smart and they are kind.

Starting this Friday 1/28 through next Friday, 2/4 we will celebrate our school and our students with a spirit event. We are excited to have fun, laugh together, and learn together throughout these 6 days. Within this special week we will celebrate our 100th day of school, International Day of Play and 2/2/22! WOW! It will be very busy on campus next week!

I am grateful to you, our parents, and to our amazing teachers and staff. Let's continue to work together.

Spreckels Strong!

With Respect,

Teresa Scherpinski

Our Positive Character Trait for February is INTEGRITY

Big picture

Growth Mindset is the belief that no matter our start point we can improve!

Encourage A Growth Mindset At Home

*Model a growth mindset in your actions at home.

• Encourage effort and perseverance over fixed

traits, such as intelligence and raw talent.
• Help your child to actively solve problems instead

of reacting to problems.
• Give feedback without criticism and judgment.
• Choose specific actions to praise.
• Help your child develop goals in his everyday life

• Provide opportunities for your child to be

challenged.
• Emphasize your child’s ability to grow in all things.

The top 20 finalists then move on to our final bee on 2/10. The County Final Bee will be held in April. (More info will be shared with 4th and 5th grade families.)

Please make sure your students wear shoes to school that they can do PE and recess in. We don't want anyone injured. Tennis shoes are best. No heels, boots, flip flops, or crocs please.

Please do not send any sodas, energy drinks, or sugary punches with your child's lunch. Please do send foods high in proteins and healthy grains. Fresh fruits and vegetables and other fresh snacks are a great idea. Research shows that healthy eating at school increases energy, improves concentration, boosts the immune system, and decreases obesity.

February 14th is We Love Fitness Day! PTO and community members will support us by hosting fitness stations for our students. Valentine's Day is the perfect day to think about our health and our hearts! Fitness is important and fun.

Don't forget about our special spirit week! Help your children plan each day so they can participate and show their school spirit.
